Allo stesso modo la storia alla base della vicenda, vera ma avvenuta in Brasile e senza sequestri, alla fine si incastra solo fino a un certo punto nel tono e nell’ambientazione a New York, che appare fuori luogo trattandosi di un caso di sfruttamento umano quasi da terzo mondo. Ne risulta un tentativo di nobilitare un film di genere con una vicenda reale scottante, un tipo di situazioni così eccessive che quasi solo il controllo stilistico assoluto, per esempio del Park Chan-wook di Mr. Vendetta, può far funzionare e che per il regista esordiente è un passo più lungo della gamba. Del resto anche il thriller di per sé non si può dire riuscito, con l’insistenza per l’espediente di un quiz sadico con le sue regole, che poi però non vengono invocate. Oppure con la minaccia di torture in stile Saw, che ci si guarda bene dal portare fino in fondo per non scivolare nell’horror.
