Al Chelsea Hotel le notti erano altro

Al Chelsea Hotel di Manhattan, gli artisti, veri o presunti tali, ci arrivavano con la certezza di trovare un ambiente stimolante, e soprattutto in grado di tollerare ogni eccesso. Tra questi, Patti Smith e Robert Mapplethorpe vi soggiornarono per anni, Andy Warhol lo scelse come location di alcuni film, Arthur Miller trovò ispirazione per i suoi romanzi, e Janis Joplin visse una breve storia d'amore con Leonard Cohen, da quest'ultimo tramutata in canzone. Il poeta Dylan Thomas ci morì pure dopo aver bevuto 18 bicchieri di whiskey nella stanza 205,  durante un poetry-reading tour.

Ora la mostra Stories from the Rooms ricorda quella splendida irripetibile stagione del Chelsea. Per chi nel miracolo dell'arte che sopperisce alla pochezza della realtà ci crede ancora.
