Run The Jewels – “RTJ4” (BMG, 2020).
Unstoppable hip-hop heavyweights Run The Jewels bulldoze the scene for a fourth time running with “RTJ4” — and we’re hard-stretched to think of a time when they’ve been this subversive. DJ Premier appears on the boom-bap banger “Ooh La La” for some classy scratch action, as 2 Chainz goes in with a cash-money verse on “Out of Sight”. Strangest of all is the slow-burning, pseudo-trap, anti-racist bounce of “JU$T”, which comes accompanied by the unlikeliest of guests; Rage Against The Machine’s Zack De La Rocha yells his trademark yowl, while Pharrell Williams spits the kind of fury we haven’t heard since the early days of N.E.R.D.
Anastasia Kristensen – “MAXIMA” (Houndstooth, 2019).
Danish rising star Anastasia Kristensen debuts on Houndstooth with new four-track affair Maxima. This set bottles the same lightning that Kristensen brought to the head-turning Ascetic EP which was released via Arcola back in March. These tunes zip along in a way that’s pitched somewhere between techno’s old and new schools. There’s classic Detroit rhythm tracking in here for sure, but this is balanced out by an upstart confidence similar to contemporary acts like D. Tiffany and upsammy. Throw in a dash of Lee Gamble’s futurism and you’ve got yourself an EP that is, all in all, another very impressive salvo from Kristensen.

Stereolab – “Fab Four Suture” (Too Pure Records, 2006).
Ormai non possiamo più stupirci degli imperscrutabili disegni dietro alle strategie discografiche degli Stereolab. Certo è che, se credevamo di averle viste tutte, quest’ultima invenzione non può che lasciarci consapevoli della nostra piccolezza di fronte all’imprevedibilità delle stramberie di Tim Gane e Laetitia Sadier. “Fab Four Suture”, infatti, è allo stesso tempo il caposaldo degli Stereolab e “anche” una raccolta di singoli. Le dodici tracce che lo compongono sono quelle dei singoli vecchio stile (solo vinile, una canzone per lato) che il gruppo ha fatto uscire in due tranche: i primi tre il 12 settembre 2005, i secondi tre il 6 marzo 2006 in contemporanea con l’album.

Ca**o, la sveglia! Devo uscire, fare la doccia, incontrare gli amici e snoozare questa inutile sveglia. Fragile, mi sento una scusa: accendo la tv, mi dico che faccio presto: bodyshaming, galleggiamento social e inutile hating o dissing, va bé,… e questa è soltanto la storia di un salto tra le stanze della Sony Music e quelle di Cologno Monzese. Ok tutto vero, anzi Verissimo. E la tv diventa una luna sorridente. Le risposte sono in quel sorriso e nelle sue canzoni (un incrocio tra pop, r’n’b e beat dirompente). Yeaowhn… ok: sbadiglio e al mio risveglio, un ricordo. Un concerto, forse un grande abbraccio familiare. Un grande concerto, un piccolo centro, una piazza e qualcuno che mi parla di te. E mentre la città si spegne e si illumina di te, come un flash causato da un tifone skippo le bellissime “Metamorfosi”, “S’illumina, “Glicine”, “Limite” con un dolore al cuore. L’intramontabile muro l.o.l. che si erge in città tra di noi sei tu, soltanto tu, “Tu [che] non devi“…
