I Franz Ferdinand annunciano oggi Hits To The Head, la raccolta dei loro più grandi successi che ripercorre la carriera della band e sarà pubblicata l’11 marzo 2022 su Domino. Conterrà anche i due brani inediti “Billy Goodbye” e “Curious”, prodotti da Alex Kapranos, Julian Corrie e Stuart Price (Dua Lipa, Madonna, Pet Shop Boys). La musica dei Franz Ferdinand (che loro stessi hanno definito come “musica per far ballare le ragazze”) continua a travolgere il mondo e loro sono diventati, in quasi 20 anni di carriera, una delle più grandi band inglesi, amatissimi dal pubblico e della critica, con oltre 10 milioni di copie di dischi vendute, 1,2 miliardi di stream, 14 platini, vittorie a Brit, Ivor Novello e Mercury Prize Awards, nomination ai Grammy e oltre 6 milioni di biglietti venduti per i loro incredibili concerti.

Entropia sembra quasi tu non ci sia. La storia di “This is a Photograph” inizia nel Gennaio 2020 con Kevin Morby che sfoglia distrattamente una scatola di vecchie foto di famiglia nel seminterrato della sua casa d’infanzia in Kansas. Poche ore prima, a una cena di famiglia, suo padre era crollato davanti a lui e aveva dovuto essere portato d’urgenza in ospedale. Quella notte Morby, ancora sotto shock, passò il tempo guardando vecchie fotografie di famiglia, finché una non gli rimase in testa: suo padre da giovane, orgoglioso, forte e pieno di fiducia, in posa su un prato senza maglietta. “Nella foto sembra giovane e pieno di fiducia – racconta Kevin Morby – con il petto gonfio verso la fotocamera come se stesse cercando una rissa.” Durante la convalescenza del padre Kevin è andato a Memphis… Hipster talis patris talis filius potremmo dire: berretto sulle ventitré in tutti i suoi primi dischi, Kevin Morby ha sempre incarnato la scena metropolitana indie alternativa con quel ritmo sincopato che fa giovane molti tra noi giovani. Lo abbiamo apprezzato in “City Music” (2017) e lo ritroviamo “impegnato” in questo ultimo test sulla codardia. Mecenate del dylanismo di frontiera, un ottimo e confortevole Kurt Vile per gli sbarbatones di oggi. La vita reel-to-reel e una “Rock Bottom” da far paura.

“What is your wish? What do you expect?” Cross Record’s self-titled third album begins with Emily Cross’s disembodied voice intoning from an otherworldly vacuum. In the three years since her last album, Cross has divorced, quit drinking, become a death doula, started the observational podcast What I’m Looking At, and toured and recorded with Sub Pop’s Loma, the trio she formed with Dan Duszynski on drums and Jonathan Meiburg (Shearwater) on guitar / vocals. On Cross Record, she guides the listener like a sonic Virgil, delivering a textured soundscape of meditative curiosity, akin to Low’s Double Negative, Broadcast’s The Noise Made By People and Radiohead’s Kid A.The record’s themes of departure and separation were inspired by changes Cross made in her career. After years of work as a nanny and in customer service, she recently embarked on studies to become a death doula. Similar to the services provided by birth doulas, a death doula helps clients navigate decisions and hardships at the end of life. In her new role, she created a three hour ceremony called a Living Funeral, which guides participants through the rituals of their own deaths. Her work in helping others face their greatest fears inhabits the same space as her art, which has always explored the metaphysical in the everyday. The eerie experience of listening to this record and the unsettling sense of songs slipping from coherent grasp share these same sensibilities. The oddness of these songs is nonetheless honest and truthful, and to understand them requires acknowledging notions of alienation in ourselves.
