Maria Sharapova has won the Australian Open for the 1st time. She has defeated 4th seed Ana Ivanovic in straight sets 7-5 6-3. The win is Sharapova’s 3rd major title.

"I was told I had a great draw at the US Open and then I played horrific tennis," Sharapova said. "You have to take it one match at a time. This was probably the toughest draw I've ever had in a Grand Slam but I'm the champion now. So if I can get a tough draw again and win it, hey, I'd do it any day. You just have to believe in yourself."

Despite losing the Australian Open final to Maria Sharapova on Saturday, Ana Ivanovic rose to a new career high of No. 2 in the world on Monday when the new Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings were released.

Serena Williams, who was the defending champion in Melbourne, slid down from No. 7 to No. 10 after falling in the quarterfinals of this year’s tournament.

American Lindsay Davenport lost in the second round of the Australian Open to Sharapova, but still earned enough points to move back inside the Top 50 for the first time since March 4, 2007.
