Sunglass trends: Bigger is better

A pair of trendy sunglasses is the ultimate fashion accessory, but choosing the right eyewear has never been more difficult thanks to the large variety in the shops.

The trend has switched from last year’s big sunglasses to this year’s even bigger extra-large sunglasses.

Among the most ostentatious are XXL-sized square sunglasses.

“They used to be worn mainly by men, but this year women are buying them too,” says Kerstin Kruschinski from Kuratorium Gutes Sehen, an independent industry organisation in Germany that provides information on eyewear.

Square sunglasses can make a face look severe. If you want to take the look to its extreme, pick a pair with a double nose-bridge, which looks very masculine.

“Women with very large noses should avoid that type of sunglass,” says Kruschinski.

If square glasses are not your thing, why not go in the opposite direction and try a big round pair as worn by Victoria Beckham.

Fine, slender frames have replaced the chunky sunglasses of yesteryear.

“It’s all about the face this year,” explains Kruschinski. The lenses may be super large but the colours and frames are much more reserved.

Soft “nude” tones such as light brown or pink can compliment the face and make it look more feminine. Pilot-style sunglasses have been a hit for quite some time but this year they are lighter than ever before. They also have a 70s touch thanks to gold or silver frames and double nose-bridges.

An alternative to the look is a pair of plastic frames in natural colours. An extreme version of the pilot sunglasses comes with coloured reflective mirror lenses.

Ray-Ban’s Wayfarer model is the trendiest sunglass on the market. The classic Wayfarer has elegant black frames but the new models are very different.

“It’s all about picking a pair to match your colour blocking,” says Andrea Lakeberg, a personal shopper. “There are no rules. You can wear pink frames with green glasses or have multi-coloured frames.” Once again, size matters and the bigger the better.

And what of yesterday’s models? Last season’s favourites included eccentric-looking round sunglasses in a 40s “panto” style later identified with Audrey Hepburn. You don’t need to pack them away indefinitely. Why not try getting coloured lenses for the same frames? “There are hardly any differences between men and women when it comes to style and colour,” explains fashion consultant Tina Kramhoeller.

Men do have the option of going for thicker frames. “And maybe pink is best left to women.” But the main rule is that the sunglasses should suit your type and you should like them.

Are there sunglasses you should avoid? Personal shopper Lakeberg says there are a couple. “Wide-framed glasses with rhinestones are out.” Models with a wide single-piece lens are also no longer in style. They look too like cycling goggles and don’t compliment a face.Read more here:white prom dresses
