Philippine shares extended their rally on Thursday as the recent decline in oil prices offset news about the possibility of more interest rate hikes.
Light crude for September delivery fell over $4 to settle at $123.98 per barrel on New York trading overnight on expectations that US demand for oil would weaken. Oil prices peaked above $147 a barrel two weeks ago.
"Investors are hopeful that the drop in oil prices would continue, allowing companies that have been hurting to recuperate in the second half. But we have yet to see if the drop can be sustained," said Astro del Castillo, First Grade Holdings managing director.
The 30-company composite index rose 72.97 points or 3.0 percent to 2,535.91.
The broader all-share index climbed 36.38 points or 2.3 percent to 1,594.29.
Gainers beat losers, 89 to 16, while 49 stocks were unchanged.
A total of 1.44 billion shares worth P2.9 billion were traded.
Del Castillo said investors would still keep a wary eye over the country's interest rate environment.
The central bank said Wednesday it was determined to fight inflation, hinting that it would increase rates further.
"High interest rates would siphon off market liquidity," Del Castillo said.
Early this month, the central bank lifted its rates by an aggressive 50 basis points to curb inflation that was running at 11.4 percent as of June.
Market heavyweight Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. jumped P25.00 or 1.0 percent to P2,420.
Ayala Land Inc., the country's biggest property developer, rose P0.30 or 3.3 percent to P9.30. The company expects its second-quarter net income to have increased over 40 percent, the same as its profit growth in the previous quarter.
Top lender Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co. advanced P1.00 or 2.9 percent to P36.00.
San Miguel Brewery Inc., the domestic beer subsidiary of beverage and food giant San Miguel Corp., edged up P0.10 or 1.2 percent to P8.50. The company reported that its net sales for the first half of the year grew 9 percent to P23.8 billion, owing to a 7-percent increase in beer sales volume.
Manila Electric Co. climbed P3.00 or 5.4 percent to P59.
Meralco shares have declined sharply in recent months amid a legal battle which all started after an attempt by one of its major shareholders, state pension fund Government Services Insurance System to revamp company management. GSIS had sought the help of the Securities and Exchange Commission , which issued a cease and desist order against the election of the Meralco board.
The Court of Appeals on Thursday voided this CDO, saying the SEC has no jurisdiction over the matter.
