The Philippine Star For Frankie Mi�±oza, it is not the caliber of former Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand, multiple leg winner Lu Wen Teh of Taiwan, or fellow local bets Juvic Pagunsan, Angelo Que and Gerald Rosales that poses a threat to his title-retention bid in the Philippine Open but Wack Wacks east layout itself.
"Everybody has a chance but the biggest rival out there is the golf course itself," said Mi�±oza during Tuesdays press conference of the $300,000 RP Open which reels off tomorrow.
"The players are your partners but the course is your true opponent. It will be myself against the course. Thats how I will approach the game and thats how its going to be this week," Mi�±oza said.
The 48-year-old winner of the 16 career titles spanning over three decades, including a first RP Open victory in 1998 at Riviera, is particularly concerned on the putting surface of Wack Wack and the challenge it will pose during the Open week.
"They have shaved the surface of the greens that make them a lot tougher and challenging. I am sure it will be difficult on the greens," said Mi�±oza, who nevertheless praised the hosts for putting up a truly testy layout.
"The course is in the best condition Ive ever seen in years," said Mi�±oza, adding Wack Wack easts putting surface could approximate those of the worlds toughest courses.
"Yes, theres a lot of short holes but even with just a wedge shot for a second shot, one cannot be sure of a good score because of the greens," said Mi�±oza, eyeing to become the first player in half a century to score a repeat in Asias oldest golf championship.
The legendary Celestino Tugot did the rare feat last in 1958, actually a four-straight championship that started in 1955 before Australian Bruce Crampton broke the streak in 1959. Tugot also won in 1949, his first, and in 1962, his last for a six Open romp although it was Larry Montes who owns the record of 12 RP Open victories.
For his back-to-back Open bid, Mi�±oza said he has to be patient and stay focused on the task at hand even as he stressed the need to put premium on course management in the next four days.
Mi�±oza is facing a strong field that includes in-form Angelo Que, who qualified for his first British Open in Singapore last week.
Other Asian Tour contenders are Indian Digvijay Singh, ranked 10th on the Asian Tours Order of Merit, Scott Barr of Australia, Asian Tour International winner Lin Wen-tang of Chinese Taipei and Koreas Lee Sung.
Rosales, meanwhile, feels right at home playing in front of his home fans and hopes to thwart his more renowned compatriot this week.
"Its always good to produce a strong result in front of the local fans. The condition is at its best, so it will be an exciting week. Familiarity with the course will be my advantage as this place is very close to home," said Rosales, who won the all-Filipino 2000 edition at Riviera.
Barr, one of the few players tipped for a winning breakthrough on the Asian Tour this season, is showing the kind of form that could well see him end the week atop the leaderboard.
"I am enjoying a good run now and my game is getting better through each event. The course is beautifully set up. I think keeping it steady with good course management will see low scores but it wont be an easy task," said Barr, who has made the cut in his last five events, with two top-15s in the bag.
