San Beda coach Frankie Lim made Pong Escobal the captain of his team for three main reasons �“ his leadership, clutch shooting and big heart.
Escobal showed all these in a pair of heroic efforts in powering the Lions to two of their four wins to gain the recognition as the Player of the Week of the NCAA Press Corps in Season 84.
The 22-year-old Davao City native fired 21 points, the bulk coming in the crucial stretch of a come-from-behind 84-83 overtime win over San Sebastian Monday, and unloaded 13 more, including some in the clutch in a 74-51 triumph over St. Benilde Friday.
And these he did despite a bout with typhoid fever.
"I didnt allow it as an excuse for me to take it easily, helping and leading the team is primary concern," said Escobal.
Lim said the performance was expected of his Lion King.
"He just showed a lot of poise despite typhoid fever and all. When the going gets tough, that guy just gets tougher," said Lim of his spitfire guard, who took over the leadership role from now Talk N Text player Yousif Aljamal.
Escobal edged the likes of Nigerian teammate Sam Ekwe and the Letran tandem of RJ Jazul and southpaw Dino Daa for the weekly plum awarded by the group of sportswriters from the countrys leading broadsheets and tabloids.
Ekwe, the 2006 rookie MVP, had norms of 14.5 points, 15.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks, Jazul 18.5 points, seven boards and five assists and Daa a whopping 21.5 points, 16 caroms, 3.5 assists and three steals.
In the end, Escobals clutch shooting in the toughest of times and situations proved the worthiest. �“ Joey Villar
