BLOG OF THE DAY (11-12 SEPTEMBER 2007)
"This is the tribute Blog to the great American 400m sprinter, Jeremy Wariner.
Most of the information provided is in English, although from time to time we will try to publish articles in Italian (which is a bit more difficult, with Jeremy being from the U.S.).
The aim of the Blog is to make Jeremy's name as popular as possible, outside his home country.
This young man has already achieved so much in his career, yet there is a lot more he can accomplish."

« WARINER: I'LL BREAK 400... | Wariner chases mentor's mark » |
Post n°29 pubblicato il 19 Febbraio 2008 da Mrs_Wariner
By James Dampney AMERICAN Jeremy Wariner, the world's best 400m runner, wants to take on the rare 200m-400m double before his glittering career comes to a close. Wariner is in Australia as he prepares to defend his Olympic 400m title at August's Beijing Olympic Games. The Texan will blow off the cobwebs with a run in the 200m at the Sydney Athletics Grand Prix and is considering running the 400m at the Melbourne meeting the following week. Wariner's mentor and agent is the great Michael Johnson, who achieved the rare 200m-400m double at the 1996 Atlanta Games and holds the world record in both distances. Johnson set the 200m record of 19.32 seconds in Atlanta before breaking the 400m mark at the 1999 world championships, running 43.18 seconds. The 24-year-old Wariner, who is unbeaten in the 400m since 2005, admits he would like to try to emulate Johnson's double before his career is over. "I want to break 20 seconds in the 200," Wariner told US Track and Field Magazine. "That's my biggest goal after the 400. "One year I'd like to go for the double." Wariner's best in the shorter distance is 20.19 seconds, while the 43.45sec 400m he ran last year has him in the frame to beat Johnson's record, something the Texan has publicly targeted. It had stood for 11 years before Johnson smashed it in Seville nine years ago and Wariner admits he still isn't sure how he will break the 43.18 barrier. "I don't know yet," Wariner said. "I'm still working on it and there's a lot of areas I can improve, but I know I can do it. "But it's going to take a lot of hard work." He already has one huge advantage in his corner - Johnson himself. Wariner readily asks the retired superstar for advice. "All the time. It's great having him as my agent," he said. "He gives me a lot of pointers watching my races. "Says you're doing this right, you're doing this wrong, just helping me out." Wariner is looking forward to the weekend, where his preparations for Beijing will go up a notch. "I'm definitely ready. I'm looking forward to it," he said. "And I'm looking forward to getting out there and seeing how I'm doing in the 200 metres this week and the 400 metres in Melbourne." |
