ADMU 79, DLSU 73

One veterans promise to come back and one rookies promise to come in certainly paid of for the Blue and White on Sunday. The Ateneo Blue Eagles survived a back and forth battle with archrival DLSU Green Archers to get a jumpstart to their Season 71 campaign.

Chris Tiu, on his 5th year of duty for Ateneo, combined with steady play from top blue-chip recruit Ryan Buenafe to come out of the gates of Season 71 with a morale-boosting win. It did not come easy for Coach Norman Blacks boys as it was an extremely tight game that had 15 deadlocks and 12 lead changes.

The first quarter was a tight yet, as usual, intense one that was low scoring. Although it saw Tiu begin his rampage as he poured in 8 of his game high 26 points in the first period that ended 16-15 in their favor.

The 2nd quarter meanwhile saw the Green Archers step on the gas and take control of the momentum. Towards the latter part of the 1st half as Jayvee Casio and James Mangahas began to deliver for Coach Franz Pumaren. DLSU took the lead at the break, 40-35.

Not letting DLSU take full control, Ateneo bounced right back in the thick of things as they crawled back into the game with help of timely drives by Ryan Buenafe who finished with 8 points. DLSU meanwhile did not let Ateneo pull away as they stuck in the thick of the fight with Mangahas and support from rookies Joshua Webb and LA Revilla. The 3rd quarter ended 56-54 with Ateneo taking their slight edge into the 4th.

Like 4 out of the 5 Ateneo – La Salle games last year that were decided by 3 points or less, this season opener looked well on its way to be another nail bitter as well. But what did not go the way of DLSU this time around was their free-throw shooting, in stark contrast, Ateneo took full advantage of theirs. DLSU was a measly 13 for 29 from the foul line while Ateneo was steady with 34 out of 42. All the way until the end when Chris Tiu went 6 for 7 from the foul line to seal the win, add to that the defensive gem of Escuata as he swipped the ball from Jayvee Casio who tried to go up for a 3 to tie the game in the last 20 seconds. Another classic one for the books as Ateneo grabbed their first win, 79 – 73.

Out of the last 10 years in the UAAP, DLSU has won 8 out of their 10 opening day matches. And so far the only 2 opening day losses have come against the Blue Eagles.

UP 82, NU 76

From a team that could not buy a single win last year, all of a sudden to a bunch of young guys, with a new young coach showing everybody a new season is a clean fresh slate. Taking on the pressure of being a school celebrating a Centennial Anniversary and being the UAAP hosts, the UP Fighting Maroons shook off the pressure as they showed poise in downing the veteran-led NU Bulldogs 82 -76 to open their campaign in Season 71.

The first quarter seemed to go the way of the experienced Bulldogs led by Jonathan Janke and Raymond Aguilar as they sprinted to 28 – 17 advantage after the first 10 minutes.

But it was totally opposite scenario in the 2nd when UP turned on the jets and outscored NU 31 to 10 that transformed an 11 point deficit into a 10 point halftime lead. Sharpshooting Martin Reyes began his onslaught in the 2nd en route to his game high 21 points which included 4 out of 8 from beyond the arc.

NU could not contain the intense defense and hot shooting of UP in the 2nd half as main Bulldog Edwin Asoro struggled all day long, totaling only 4 points but was 0 for 4 from the field. Jahnke led the Bulldogs with 17 points while Aguilar chipped in 13 points and 4 rebounds.

It was an extactic atmosphere for UP who rejoice like they won a championship after getting its first win since season 69. But new coach Aboy Castro was quick to say that his boys were not yet to be considered a force to be reckoned with and just hopes they can contain the upbeat mood and confidence to have a good showing in Season 71.
