Four-peat champion Harbour Centre, still reeling from a nerve-wracking first encounter, hopes to bounce back against Hapee Toothpaste in Game 2 of their title showdown in the PBL Lipovitan Amino Sports Cup in Trece Martires, Cavite.
The Complete Protectors snared Game One, 74-73, after unleashing a massive rally from 18 points at the Batangas City Sports Complex Wednesday and will be shooting for their second win in the best-of-five series.
"We lost our focus, so everything that we worked so hard to achieve in the first three quarters went up in smoke," said a disappointed Harbour coach Jorge Gallent.
Hapee mentor Louie Alas knows the Mikee Romero-owned franchise is going to go all out for a win.
"Knowing Harbour Centre, we have to prepare hard because I know they will come back strong," said Alas, gunning for his first PBL title, adding the Protectors "should not give them an inch because they are a dangerous squad."
The Complete Protectors pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in league history after they clawed back from an 18-point third quarter deficit, pulling off the close win in Wednesdays series opener.
And Alas credits it to the players character and desire to finally end the Batang Piers two-year reign.
"We proved during Game 1 that these boys have what it takes to win a crucial game. And the way we battled back back from 18-point deficit was a proof of their desire to get even with Harbour," said Alas.
Defense also proved crucial for the Complete Protectors as they shackled the Batang Pier in the fourth quarter including the final four-minute stretch when they were held to just a field goal.
Alfie Grijaldo, stepping up in the absence of the injured Jervy Cruz, underscored Hapees resolute defense as he blocked a potential game-winning lay-up by Jason Castro at the buzzer that sealed the win. �“ Joey Villar
