Filipino workers in Austria have started looking for ways to scrimp on their daily needs after consumer prices in the country rose by 0.8 percent in April, an ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau report said Monday.

Ronnie Castillo, an overseas Filipino worker in Austria, said the rise in food prices is similar to what his kababayans are experiencing in the Philippines.

“We the consumers here are very much affected by the increase of high prices of our basic needs like food. If this high inflation would continue in the next months, this will surely increase the financial burden not only among Austrians with low and medium-sized incomes but also our ‘kababayans here who depend mostly on part time jobs,†Castillo told ABS-CBN Europe.

Cel Vista, a Filipino nurse, said there are alternatives to assuage the increase in rice prices.

"Well, we have to look for other alternatives most especially for us Pinoys here. We know very much that the price of rice has increased by more than 30 percent lately. Why cant we try also eating potatoes or salad? These are still quite cheap but rich in nutrients," she said.

Rising fuel and food costs drove Austrian consumer prices higher by 0.8 percent for the month of April and 3.5 percent for the year, which is slightly above the European Union average of 3.4 per cent, Statistik Austria earlier reported.

Driven mostly by higher fuel and food prices, the March inflation rate nudged upwards from January to April 2008 rates both of 3.5 per cent. In December 2007, Austrian inflation reached a long-time peak of 3.6 per cent.

Statistik Austria said average prices for food and beverages rose 7.8 per cent in April while transportation fares rose 7.3 per cent, driven by a 26 per cent average increase in prices for fuels.

"The main reason for the present inflation problem in Austria is mainly because of the increasing price of oil, which results in the increase of food prices and other basic commodities. I am very much convinced that food prices would not decrease for the next three to five months," Austrian economist Josef Baumgartner told ABS-CBN. Hector Pascua, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau
