Energy Secretary Angelo T. Reyes has lauded the participants in the successful launch of the first Earth Hour campaign in the country.
Reyes, who is also the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Climate Change , congratulated the World Wide Fund for Nature – Philippines and the Green Army for a powerful symbolic effort to raise public consciousness on global warming during the countdown program at the Cultural Center of the Philippines fountain lawn.
Reyes also expressed his appreciation to the Manila Electric Co. for its active participation in laying the groundwork for the actual switching off of lights.
Last March 29, more than a million Filipinos across the country turned off their lights from 8-9 p.m. in support of the global movement aimed at sending a message on the need for united action on the issue of climate change.
Reyes cited that based on the data released by the wholesale electricity spot market and MERALCO, some 56 megawatts hours worth of savings in energy consumption was recorded in that hour in Luzon alone. This was equivalent to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30.7 tons.
The energy chief pointed out that the challenge to an effective response to climate change hinges on inter-sectoral support and cooperation.
"The successful conduct of the countrys first participation in Earth Hour is both a testimony and a positive development in further strengthening the cooperation among national government agencies, non-government organizations, the private sector, civil society and other stakeholders," Reyes added.
The city governments of Manila, Pasay and Parañaque came in full force to show their support to the WWF initiative.
In attendance during the program were Manila City Mayor Alfredo Lim, Pasay City Mayor Wenceslao Trinidad and Parañaque City Mayor Florencio Bernabe, Jr. who all shared the view that concerted and immediate action is needed to address climate change.
In other parts of Metro Manila, Makati, Mandaluyong, Quezon City, Caloocan, San Juan, Pasig and Marikina held their own switch off programs. Other cities and provinces across the nation also took part in Earth Hour.
