Doctors are currently struggling to save the life of a three-year-old boy who remains unconscious after swallowing a P0.25 coin last week.
ABS-CBN News reported Sunday that doctors at the East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City were able to retrieve the coin swallowed by JR Casipit Tuesday, said Myrna, the victim's mother.
The mother said her child was confined at the hospital for three days for observations and tests. Doctors were able to recover the coin from the boy's body on Thursday.
However, when doctors injected an antibiotic to the patient, the child suddenly convulsed and fell unconscious.
As of Sunday, the boy is still unconscious and remains dependent on an ambulizer for breathing.
Mrs. Casipit said the doctors are not telling her the exact condition of her son.
The hospital, meanwhile, is still uncertain if either the coin or the antibiotic caused the child to fall into unconsciousness.
"We cannot say if it's the injection. It could be the P0.25 coin that he swallowed because he may have lost oxygen while it is being retrieved by doctors...it's dangerous to lose oxygen even for a few seconds...but we'll look into the exact cause," said Dr. Roland Cortez, EAMC director.
The hospital assured the boy's family that it will do its best to help the child recover. With a report from Apples Jalandoni, ABS-CBN News
