The Invitation

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to
know what you ache for, and if you dare
to dream of meeting your heart's longing.

It doesn't interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals
or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain. I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, wihtout moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy,
mine or your own, if you can dance with the wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul;
if you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see beauty, even when its not pretty, every day, and if you can source your own life from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and
still stand on the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon,
"Yes!"

It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to knowif you can get up, after the night of grief and despair,
weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done to feed
the children.

It doesnt interest me who you know or how you came
to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the
fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you, from the inside, when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company
you keep in the empty moments.

Non mi interessa sapere quel che fai per vivere.
Voglio sapere per che cosa soffri,
e se osi sognare di incontrare la passione del tuo cuore.
Non mi interessa sapere quanti anni hai.
Voglio sapere se avrai il coraggio di rischiare di sembrare folle per amore, per i tuoi sogni, per l'avventura di essere vivo.
Non mi interessa sapere quali pianeti sono in quadratura con la tua luna.
Voglio sapere se hai toccato il centro del tuo dolore,
se le delusioni della vita hanno ampliato i tuoi orizzonti o
se ti sei ripiegato su te stesso per paura di soffrire ancora!
Voglio sapere se puoi star seduto con il dolore, il mio o il tuo,
senza far nulla per nasconderlo, allontanarlo o immobilizzarlo.
Voglio sapere se sei capace di stare nella gioia, la mia o la tua;
se puoi danzare selvaggiamente e lasciare che l'estasi ti riempia fino alla punta delle dita dei piedi e delle mani senza esortarci ad essere prudenti o realistici, o consapevoli dei limiti umani.
Non mi interessa sapere se la storia che mi racconti è vera.
Voglio sapere se sei capace di deludere un altro per restare fedele a te stesso, e di non tradire mai la tua anima, a costo di lasciare che gli altri ti chiamino traditore. Voglio sapere se puoi essere di parola, e quindi degno di fiducia.
Voglio sapere se sai vedere la bellezza ogni giorno, anche quando non è piacevole, e se riesci a trovare la sorgente della tua vita dalla sua presenza.
Voglio sapere se puoi vivere con il fallimento, il tuo e il mio, e ancora ergerti sulla riva di un lago e gridare all'argento della luna piena, “SÌ!”
Non mi interessa sapere dove vivi, né quanto denaro possiedi.
Voglio sapere se puoi alzarti dopo una notte di pena e disperazione,
addolorato e ferito fino alle ossa, e fare il tuo dovere per sfamare i tuoi figli.
Non mi interessa sapere chi sei e perchè sei qui.
Voglio sapere se starai in piedi con me al centro del mirino, senza tirarti indietro.
Non mi interessa sapere dove o cosa o con chi hai studiato.
Voglio sapere cosa ti sorregge dentro quando tutto il resto crolla
Voglio sapere se puoi stare da solo con te stesso,
e se davvero ti piace la compagnia che ti fai nei momenti di vuoto.
