Today Netkas and flukes1 who have successfully tried out to fix the PS3 lv2_kernel in v3.55 Firmware , allow peek and poke syscalls, meaning PlayStation 3 backup managers and Custom Firmware (CFW) will also be able to make use of them!

From the ReadMe file:Patch to add peek and poke syscalls to PS3 firmware v3.55 by flukes1 and netkas (irc.efnet.net #ps3test)

To create the patched PS3UPDAT.PUP:

1. Use bspatch to apply PS3UPDAT.PUP.bsdiff to Sony's official 3.55 PUP, which is available from their website.
2. Run this from command line: "bspatch PS3UPDAT.PUP PS3UPDAT-NEW.PUP PS3UPDAT.PUP.bsdiff"
2. Ensure that the md5sum of the resulting PS3UPDAT.PUP is: 337831fac6a9b05074f73710c4bb7c86

Simply install the patched PS3UPDAT.PUP onto your PS3, then install PS3 break or other PS3 jailbreak items,for example:PS jailbreak,E3 card reader .

Our PUP can be installed over any firmware version, including 3.55-geohot. If you install over 3.55-geohot, you must reinstall geohot's jailbreak afterwards.

For developers: peek is syscall 6, poke is syscall 7 (same as PL3 dev payload)

OK, here's the guide to patch your own games:

1) Download and compile latest tools from git.fail0verflow.com Git (old versions of unself produce incorrect ELF)
2) Extract ELF from SELF
3) Hexedit ELF, find and replace dev_bdvd to correct path on dev_hdd0 (not all, but most games require this step)
4) Build NPDRM SELF using Geohot's tools
5) Build package using psn_package_npdrm
6) Patch your builded package using Geohot's tool (only for 3.55 firmware)

That's it. If you can't follow this guide, a more detailed guide won't help you.

nathan_r32_69, a Spanish PlayStation 3 developer, has published a Beta release of PS3 CFW Evilnat today together with details on their BackUp Loader WIP.

Tomorrow I will put the download link if you want to leaf through and tinker with, I will add new features like the Debug Options in Settings.

Right now I leave it installed to mess with homebrew signed and improve your firmware, and also edit the Game OS.

btw if you don't want to mess with the whole packages algo stuff, just use AES CTR with the package key iv at 0x70 in the package. Sorry I forgot to include the readme in the fixed release, this is now fixed as well. btw that hmac key was fail, don't use it, another is actually used.

It's not really signed, just encrypted with AES and HMAC.PS jailbreak woops I forgot to enable the button when I cleaned up the app (yeah I fail, gonna do a small re-release xD) btw I forgot to mention in the readme this is not the 1:1 algorithm, it's been improved, it extracts pkgs roughly 3 times as fast as on ps3.

What does this do ?

This will decrypt and extract Playstation 3, Playstation Portable and mixed GAME PACKAGES (NOT UPDATER ONES !) onto your pc.

How do I use it ?

Just open the package you want to extract or drag and drop it and click on "Extract package"

Can I run this on Linux ?

Sorry this app is windows only, however full sources have been supplied along with it so feel free to make a Linux port out of it, you have my blessing.

Can This encrypt/sign my game packages ?

NO, when this application was written, the main concern was about packages decryption, so that part was kinda skipped, however it is trivial to do the reverse operation, remember, sources are supplied.

Here is the little story, this little app was done since litterally AGES , distributed to a very small amount of people, and was conveniently designed and used to decrypt packages and repack them on our debug consoles so we wouldn't have to QA flag them to update our games or install games we purchased from the ps store.

The algorithm was a bit of a pain to reverse but the keys could be easily grabbed with a lv2 exploit. So here we are, this app was done but the problem is it couldn't be leaked because I andPS3 break a few other people who were entrusted with it, were kinda afraid that sony would change the keys and fix whatever exploits we had (turned out they didn't) but since we can now get whatever
new keys they add/change this has become a quite irrelevant concern. The next concern was piracy.

There was nothing at the time justifying a release for that application, most people would just not have a legit use for it so releasing was out of the question.

So what changed our minds ? Well, ccc happened, and Segher (props to him !) figured how to conveniently calculate private keys and suddenly a legit use appeared, as people would/might need to encrypt their packages to install their own signed apps onto their consoles. This is not a 1:1 algorithm port as it's been improved, thus the decryption happens 3 times as fast as on playstation 3PS3 Game HDD.
