The Purchased for dh and he liked the look. Very disaapointed that it did not fit properly and had a dirty spot on one of the shoulders. This is going back. Great job Gramicci and Sierra for selling it. What inspired your resort collection?
When I think of resort I think high summer and holidays. I wanted to cleanse the palate with something clean, fresh, and white, white, white. I’m fascinated by crocodiles [so I went] to Darwin to photograph them. The crocodile photo became the print and the shape of the print is cubic: it’s a square that sits next to the body. That became the silhouette of the season.

What kind of woman do you design for?
I ask myself: what does a woman need? I have huge respect for women: for the mother; for the working woman. I like to give them a great silhouette with easy movement in the clothes. I like to make them feel fresh and modern.

Ralph lauren dual match What’s the best part of being a designer?
Whenever I feel fed up with it all I come back to the idea of the person buying my garment and having experiences wearing that garment. Even if it’s just discovering a pocket so you don’t have to carry a bag. Or it’s the feeling of being able to dance and drive in a dress that looks structured but still has movement. Or you wash it a hundred times but it still looks good. If you’re wearing an amazing piece of clothing it makes you feel better.

ralph lauren polo Can you think of any encounters with customers where your clothes had that effect?
I met a young woman who had just had cancer. She’d just finished chemo and was going to a friend’s wedding. It was her first outing and she’d [recently] been told she couldn’t have children. She came into the store, bought a Willow dress and wore it [to the reception.] That night she met her future husband and they ended up having a child together. That dress represented a turning point for her – this release into her new life.

Embroidered Polos What are your plans for Willow?
On August 1 we’re launching a new e-commerce store (at www.willowltd.com) selling the whole Willow range with international shipping and our new retail store is now open at Chatswood Chase in Sydney so I’m really excited. The shirt did not have the usual tidy appearance of a polo shirt.  The only drawback is the dark stripe that runs over the top of the chest and the top of the arm (shoulder) is different material then the rest and is tight.
