“Our board made the decision to purchase the building, and the deal was finalized on June 28,” said centre executive director Debra MacLean. “Along with owning the building, there are a couple of other huge advantages. There’s a garage where we can store and sort donated items, so they don’t have to be housed in the shop.”

There is also a large container on the property for clothing that doesn’t move or isn’t suitable.

“We’ll be selling those to the overseas market, so nothing will go to waste.”

MacLean said a big plus for the centre were the racks and shelves donated from the former Zellers store in the North Sydney Mall.

“That was huge for us,” she said. “Now when you walk in to Nora’s New To You, it’s like you are walking into any retail outlet. It is airy and bright, with easy access to a wide variety of items.”

MacLean said the move to the new location was made easier by staff and dedicated volunteers who helped on evenings and weekends to get the store up and running.

“There is such support for the centre from our community. We have ladies that come every week that sort, wash and iron the clothing,” MacLean said. “We also have Kelly Mills who comes in and organizes the various departments. She has a real eye for what flows and for what works in a particular space. It’s all positive.”

ralph lauren polo the centre is partially funded by the Department of Community Services and administered by a volunteer board of directors made up of individuals from the Northside community. Haley Street Adult Services Centre Society is responsible to come up with a portion of the funds to operate the centre.

“There is an apartment on the second floor, and that’s revenue we didn’t have before that helps cover our overhead. Purchasing the building was a real positive move for us, it’s been an amazing process.”

MacLean added that anything that comes into an economically depressed community that is employing people and providing, affordable, good quality merchandise, is good for the entire community, not just Haley Street.

Donations can be left at the centre on Haley Street or the store.

“Along with our new and gently used items, we also offer new items such as purses and ladies accessories,” said centre manager Shaeleen MacLean. “It is so much easier to organize the layout of the store because of the extra space. There is also an air exchange, and air conditioning, which is great for the staff and our customers.”

She said the volume of traffic has increased because of people coming off the Trans Canada.

“We also have plenty of parking, which is a real bonus as well.” Comfortable fit (sometimes a problem with polo shirts), well made - just a good shirt.
