SUDAN: UN denies the kidnapping of its soldiers in Darfur

AFP - Soldiers of the strength of peacekeeping in the Darfur region of Sudan are not held hostage, said Monday the UN-African Union Mission (UNAMID), after the rebels had announced he held them.

"They have not been taken hostage but they are blocked since yesterday in north-west of Darfur," war-torn region of western Sudan, told AFP a spokesman for UNAMID.

She said the soldiers were free to move but they "work release" of three civilians who were with them. 

The rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) rebel group, the most militarized Darfur, had previously announced he held since Sunday three alleged members of the Sudanese intelligence services and 49 members of UNAMID.

But the spokesman for the UNAMID reported that three civilians working for UNAMID, not for the government. "They are not spies," she assured.
