GREECE: The EU urged the future government to respect the commitments made by Athens

 

The European Commission expects the Greek government that "respects its commitments" under the bailout of the country, said Monday one of its spokesmen, the day after the e ; legislative elections in Greece.

Greek voters overwhelmingly rejected Sunday the austerity demanded by the EU and the IMF in exchange for aid paid in the country.

The right-wing leader Antonis Samaras government, came top of the Greek legislation, proposed the formation of "a government of national salvation" to keep Greece in the euro, s' commitment to "change policy memorandum" austerity until "the return of growth and peaceful society". 

"There is still no new government in Greece, but the Commission hopes and expects that the future government to respect the commitments made by Greece," said the spokesman of the Commission, Pia Ahrenkilde-Hansen, during a press conference.

"The Commission is of course ready to continue to assist Greece with the ongoing reforms in the second program of economic adjustment," she added.

Greece is expected to launch Monday the procedures for forming a coalition government, a task that seems impossible without bringing one of the five parties opposed to the austerity imposed on the Gre ; it by its creditors, the IMF and the European Union. 

It belongs to the Greeks "to agree and we hope this can be done quickly to form a government," added Ms. Ahrenkilde-Hansen, noting that the adjustment program "is based an economic recovery to sustainable growth and job creation "in Greece.

The German government has reiterated on Monday his side that the European aid plan agreed with Athens was the best way out of the crisis.
