CHINA: Case Chen: Beijing would allow Chinese dissident to leave the country

China said Friday that Chen could apply to study abroad, paving the way for a possible settlement of the diplomatic crisis that pitted him against Washington on fate of the opponent.

This declaration, made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, came as the lawyer for 40 years, who is blind, has publicly expressed concern for his safety in a telephone conversation with U.S. lawmakers, broadcast live by TV channels in the U.S. where the file was called in the election campaign .

Chen was hospitalized in Beijing since its release Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy where he took refuge after escaping to April 22 vigilance of his guards who curled his home where he was under house arrest for nineteen months, in Shandong Province. He was treated for a broken foot, a result of his escape. "Chen is currently being treated in hospital," said the spokesman of Foreign Ministry, Liu Weimin, a brief statement. "If he wants to study abroad, he can apply through normal channels with relevant departments in accordance with the law, like any other Chinese citizen. "A lawyer specializing in defending human rights, Tang Jitian, nevertheless warned that the Chinese authorities could very well be the last procedure ; hard to delay the departure of Chen. "This statement by the Foreign Ministry is positive news, but we do not know how it goes. For example, there are many potential obstacles to the initiation of administrative proceedings. We can not be 100% optimistic, "he said. For some commentators, the Communist Party leadership feared could create a dangerous precedent. To U.S. lawmakers, Chen reiterated his interest in visiting the United States. "In ten years, I have not had a moment of rest," said the objector, whose remarks in Mandarin came out of a cell phone held in front of a microphone during & rsquo ; a session of Congress devoted to his case. "I'm really scared," Chen was handed over to Chinese authorities by U.S. diplomats who say they have received from Pe ; kin assurance that it would be better treated and may live together with his wife and two children. But the dissident has finally decided to remain in China, worried about his safety and that of his family. "I really fear for the lives of other family members. They installed video cameras in September and are in my house, "he told lawmakers. In a brief telephone interview with Reuters, Chen expressed concern about not being able to meet U.S. diplomats since he left the embassy. "They came but were not allowed to enter," he said from his hospital room. He is also alarmed that the movements of his wife, Yuan Weijing, are restricted and monitored. "My situation is not good," said the lawyer. The journalists gathered outside the hotel were kept away by police Friday. Two U.S. embassy officials entered the hospital with bags but they could not penetrate the wing where the opponent and dice put their bags containing two cell phones and food. The Bush administration defends its handling of the case, noting that Chen intended to remain primarily in China before changing his mind, but the defenders of the dissident require the White House that it guarantees its safety. The case of Chinese opponent Chen broke dramatically in the presidential campaign in the United States, where Barack Obama is strongly criticized by his Republican opponents. () The case Chen has also pushed the visit to Beijing by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, came for two days of talks designed to streamline the annual Sino-im Rican. Making a good showing, Hillary Clinton said Friday that President Hu Jintao the China-United States had never been stronger. () But Beijing has publicly condemned the U.S. intervention in this matter and demanded an apology from Washington. The Beijing Daily, the organ of the PC in the Chinese capital, called Chen a "pawn" used by the United States to interfere with China and undermine the power Communist Party. ()
