Sunflowers Be Used

Post n°6 pubblicato il 07 Giugno 2014 da inhypquiprotr

This winter so far we have had proper weather, freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall and windy rainy days- enough to stop anyone from venturing outside to peer at their garden. I have so far looked at mine of the kitchen window and can see my poor garden has suffered more than usual this year and is looking fairly bleak. As the winter solstice is now behind us, slowly the days are getting lighter at last and it is a good time to start planning the year ahead.

There is plenty to get on with and lists to write. I do enjoy a good to-do list and this year's list will take in jobs in the garden as well as new purchases of seeds and plants. I love experimenting and trying new plant combinations as well as growing new and unusual varieties of veg so browsing the seed catalogues with a cup of tea to хэнд is always a pleasurable pastime.

I find that, apart from copious amounts of chocolate and cake, getting out in the garden as soon as the tiniest rays of sunshine are showing cheers me up no end. I plan to have a huge tidy up and will start getting my veg garden prepped and ready by cleaning up the paths and borders and giving the beds a good layer of rotted compost. I left my Verbena bonariensis to set its seed and now it needs cutting back to a few shoots. My grasses all look as if something large has sat on them so I will get splitting the clumps fairly soon.

Now is also a good time to start some pruning. Apples, Wisteria, Vines and other climbers can all be tidied up and tied back. Summer-flowering shrubs such as weigelas, spiraeas, kolkwitzias and philadelphus should be pruned soon after flowering in the summer- this means strong shoots for the following year and lots of flowers. However, if you did not get round to this particular job, and it is easy to forget, just take out some of the old wood now to get increase new growth for the spring, but remember to leave the newer growth as this is where the flowering buds will be.

Pruning is probably one of my favourite gardening jobs and I love nothing more than working on a mad tangle of Wisteria or Clematis or an unruly apple tree. Remember to take pruning in stages, better to go slowly and prune a bit at a time, and keep standing back to get a good look at your work because you can always cut off more, but you can't stick it back on. A lesson I have learned the hard way on a few occasions!

It's also a good time to think about what seeds to sow this year. By the end of January I hope to be sowing seed for my peas and early carrots as long as the weather warms up a bit, which this week it has, in a strange, spring has sprung way, birds singing their heads off and warm sunshine coming in the windows.

The Real Seed Company () have a great month by month sowing suggestions list and recommend sowing winter salads and oriental greens, as long as you keep them in a greenhouse or under a cloche. I'm going to be growing some Mizuna which is great in salads, and trying their 'Komatsuna' Japanese Kale. They have an interesting array of seeds on offer and it's easy to buy too many!

Now is also a great time to attack any cleaning and repair jobs. Take a good look at all your fencing and paving which might need attention or if the frost has got to any stonework make sure to get it repaired, especially in Bath where we have so many Bath stones walls.

Invest in a good jet washer, they are invaluable for cleaning any external timber or stone, especially after the extremely cold weather and wet conditions we have been having, as everything turns green so quickly.

You might also be thinking about changing your garden altogether this year. It is well worth getting some gardening magazines and books and starting to get some ideas and inspiration. Consider what you want to use your garden for. How much time you have to spend looking after it and how it would best fit in with the style of your house. Sketch out a plan and mark in where you want borders or somewhere to sit and remember to note where the sun is in the morning and afternoon.

This is not the cheeriest time of year for gardeners but with spring around the corner there is plenty to be planning and plotting.
