Bills negotiating to re

(AP) The Buffalo Bills haven't given up on resigning cornerback Leodis McKelvin before the former firstround draft pick is eligible to become a free Shane Vereen Jersey agent next week.

McKelvin's agent, Hadley Engelhard, told The Associated Press on Thursday that negotiations are ongoing, and the two sides are scheduled to talk again Friday. He described talks as being in "the beginning stages."

Barring a deal being reached with Buffalo, Engelhard is preparing to start entertaining offers from other NFL teams on Saturday. That's when a threeday window opens allowing teams to begin contacting players before they're Kids Shane Vereen Jersey eligible to become free agents on Tuesday.

The Bills could still resign McKelvin before the freeagency period opens, but they risk the player's asking price going up once he's allowed to talk with other teams.

"Things will pick up on Saturday, but I don't rule anything out until a deal is done," Engelhard said.

Selected 11th overall out of Troy in 2008, McKelvin has had difficulty maintaining a starting job in Buffalo.

Used mostly as a third cornerback last year, McKelvin had one interception in 13 games, including footballPatriotsprostore.com four starts. He missed the final three games because of a groin injury. Overall, he has six interceptions in 64 games, with only 33 starts.

McKelvin has made a bigger impact on special teams, having combined for four touchdowns returning kickoff and punts. Last year, he led the NFL averaging 18.7 punt return yards, and became the first Bills player to return two punts for touchdowns in one season. As a rookie, McKelvin set the singleseason franchise record with 1,468 yards on kickoff returns.

On Thursday, the Bills announced they've retained tight end Mike Caussin by rolling over the final year of his contract. Caussin missed last season while recovering from right knee surgery. Buffalo acquired Caussin in December 2010 by signing him off Jacksonville's practice squad. He has five catches for 41 yards in six games with Buffalo.

AFC East breakdown

Here is my first out of the box pick for 2008. The Buffalo Bills will make the playoffs, obviously going the wild card route with perennial favorite New England owning the AFC East. Quarterback Trent Edwards suffered a deep right thigh bruise in a collision with running back Marshawn Lynch the day before training camp ended. Losman might see some significant time if Edwards is unable to go.

With either signal caller behind center, the Bills look to build off a decent 2007 season and I believe this team will have just enough to squeak into the playoffs in a very competitive footballPatriotsprostore.com AFC conference. Losman is also a free agent at the end of the year so if he gets the nod he will be auditioning for a bunch of teams that are in need of a good quarterback.

Offensively, this unit was very predictable last year. Brandon Spikes Jersey Offensive coordinator Turk Schonert has promised a more wideopen attack but Edwards or Losman have to show they are capable quarterbacks. Each has shown promise in their time as starters but for Buffalo to move forward they have to be consistent week in and week out. Lee Evans should bounce back to have a productive season and the addition of wide receiver James Hardy should open up the downfield passing game. Lynch was outstanding as a rookie and should duplicate his success in his second year.

On defense, the Bills have been horrible against the run in recent memory and on top of it allowed the most passing yards in team history. The Bills acquired threetime Pro Bowl defensive tackle Marcus Stroud from the Jaguars in hopes of shoring up the Dline. Leodis McKelvin was drafted to help at cornerback but significant contributions will be needed from defensive ends Aaron Schobel and Chris Womens Brandon Spikes Jersey Kelsay to take some pressure off the corners.

Head coach Dick Jauron has done a good job in Buffalo although it hasn shown up with wins and losses. Two specialteams players, kicker Greg Rivara and long snapper Evan Jacobsen, stood out.

Jacobsen, a 6foot1, 246pounder from Laguna Niguel, Calif., was a surprise (well, maybe not to him) No. 1 in the bench press with 27 repetitions at 225 pounds.

Rivara, who came to UNM from Albuquerque St. Pius X High School by way of New Mexico Highlands University, hit a 60yard field goal and several from 55 yards out as Arizona Cardinals scout Josh Scobey looked on.

Most other times, heights and distances achieved Thursday by 15 former Lobo football players were not disclosed.
