Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of freedom and liberty. For Mexicans, it commemorates a victory over the French army that dates back to May 5, 1862. For Aspen locals, it signifies a spring fiesta, such as the ones that took place at Su Casa and the Cantina on May 5, 2005. Under Emperor Napoleon III, the French army invaded Mexico with the intent of collecting debts from the newly elected government of President Benito Juarez.
