VOIVOD - L' Inizio Della Fine? Intervista

La tanto geniale quanto sottovalutata band canadese è stata, ed è tuttora, una meravigliosa e unica realtà della musica moderna, che ha sfornato autentici capolavori artistico/musicali del calibro di "Killing Technology", "Dimension Hatross" e "Nothingface". Come descritto in sede di recensione, "Katorz" è un disco qualitativamente eccellente e privo di compromessi con le mode imperanti nel ventunesimo secolo. Simpatici e disponibili, Snake e Away fanno il punto della situazione in questa breve chiacchierata di inizio estate, nella quale emerge la certezza di aver contribuito in modo decisivo all'evoluzione dell'heavy metal più cerebrale e colto, anche se, sin dalle prime battute, traspare l'amara constatazione di aver perso un chitarrista insostituibile per classe e inventiva, oltre che un grande amico...

...INDUBBIAMENTE AVETE ATTRAVERSATO UN PERIODO DIFFICILISSIMO DURANTE LA MALATTIA DI PIGGY E DOPO LA SUA SCOMPARSA. COSA POTETE DIRMI A RIGUARDO DEL PROCESSO DI COMPOSIZIONE E DI REGISTRAZIONE DI "KATORZ" E QUALI SENTIMENTI REGNAVANO IN SENO ALLA BAND?

(Away) "E' stata davvero dura per noi portare a termine le registrazioni di 'Katorz' e tuttora è difficile esprimere i sentimenti che provavamo in quel periodo irreale, dato che in noi regnava un forte sentimento di rabbia e tristezza per la scomparsa del nostro amico Piggy. Indubbiamente, 'Katorz' è un disco che rappresenta uno spartiacque della nostra carriera".

(Snake) "Piggy era un chitarrista geniale ed un ottimo amico e la sua scomparsa è un vuoto incolmabile per la band. In quel periodo ci sembrava di stare dentro un tunnel pieno di nebbia e senza luce alla fine di esso".

PENSO CHE IL VOSTRO ULTIMO ALBUM SIA IL SEQUEL IDEALE DI "VOIVOD", MA CON UNA MARCIA IN PIU': A MIO AVVISO LE CANZONI SUONANO PIU' CORPOSE E SONO MAGGIORMENTE RICCHE DI SFACCETTATURE...

(Away) "Sì, sono assolutamente d'accordo con la tua breve analisi. Lo stile e il sound prevalentemente stoner rock delle composizioni non si differenziano molto da 'Voivod', disco nel quale avevamo dato una svolta netta verso composizioni più rock e meno claustrofobiche...ma in questo caso Piggy ha svolto un lavoro eccellente sui riff e sui solo e Jasonic ha contribuito in modo determinante nel creare un wall of sound granitico".

DIFATTI, CREDO CHE JASONIC ABBIA SVOLTO UN LAVORO ECCELLENTE ALLE QUATTRO CORDE, IL SOUND DEL BASSO E' A DIR POCO TERREMOTANTE...

(Snake) "Yeah, Newsted è entrato immediatamente nello spirito della band al 100%. Nel corso della sua carriera ha dimostrato di essere un grande bassista e con noi ricopre un ruolo di primaria importanza, infatti i nostri ultimi due dischi a livello di produzione hanno una marcia in più, il sound è più nitido e potente rispetto al passato".

"KATORZ" E' UN CONCEPT ALBUM?

(Away) "No, ogni canzone narra una storia a sè stante, anche se la rabbia e l'ironia sono due sentimenti ben marcati che fungono da filo conduttore per tutto l'album. A differenza dei nostri vecchi dischi, questa volta abbiamo voluto esprimere a tutti i fan i nostri sentimenti e le nostre emozioni più intime (Snake tira un sospiro e ride in modo sarcastico, ndR)".

C'E' UNA CANZONE ALLA QUALE SIETE PARTICOLARMENTE LEGATI?

(Away) "Indubbiamente 'Polaroids'! Adoro questa canzone sia per le liriche che per la musica. Ritengo che sia una delle più belle composizioni incise nella nostra carriera e sono sicuro che piacerà tantissimo anche ai nostri fan".

POSSIAMO AVERE UNA MINIMA SPERANZA DI VEDERE UN CONCERTO DEI VOIVOD IN ITALIA?

(Snake) "Ci piacerebbe davvero tanto, anche se come puoi ben immaginare dalla morte di Piggy i nostri progetti hanno subito un brusco cambiamento di rotta. Al momento nulla è definito, anche se nella vita può succedere davvero di tutto e credimi suonare dal vivo mi regala emozioni indescrivibili."

DESCRIVETECI IN POCHE PAROLE COSA NE PENSATE DEI VOSTRI STUDIO ALBUM SINO A "PHOBOS"...

(Snake & Away) "'War And Pain' è un album acerbo, urgente e naif (scoppia una risata collettiva!, ndR), nel quale non avevamo la piena padronanza delle nostre capacità tecniche; 'Rrroooaaarrrr!' è un album dalla decisa attitudine hardcore, dato che abbiamo cercato di suonare nel modo più veloce possibile in linea con quanto prodotto da band come Possessed e Slayer; 'Killing Technology' rappresenta sicuramente il punto di rottura con i due dischi precedenti, difatti in quel periodo ci siamo evoluti lasciando da parte la nostra foga giovanile per comporre qualcosa di più tecnico, creativo e originale; 'Dimension Hatross' perfeziona il discorso iniziato con il disco precedente, è semplicemente un disco dal sound nucleare; 'Nothingface' è un lavoro ricco di influenze psichedeliche (non a caso è presente il rifacimento di 'Astronomy Domine' dei Pink Floyd, ndR); 'Angel Rat' è sicuramente più diretto e rock oriented dei suoi predecessori; 'The Outer Limits' è una sorta di summa del lavoro svolto sino ad allora; 'Negatron' rappresentò un nuovo inizio per noi (Eric Forrest sostituì Snake, ndR) ed è un lavoro molto aggressivo; infine, il successivo 'Phobos' è il disco più oscuro e inquietante registrato dai Voivod".

SIETE SEMPRE STATI UN GRUPPO ORIGINALE CHE DI ALBUM IN ALBUM HA SEMPRE COMPOSTO QUALCOSA DI NUOVO SENZA SCIMMIOTTARE LE TENDENZE CHE IMPERAVANO NEGLI ANNI '80, NEGLI ANNI '90 E NEL VENTUNESIMO SECOLO. QUAL E' IL SEGRETO DELLA VOSTRA COERENZA ARTISTICA?

(Away) "Siamo sempre stati noi stessi sin dall'inizio, evitando compromessi di qualunque tipo. Forse è per questo motivo che non siamo diventati delle superstar (ride, ndR)".
(Snake) "La nostra missione sulla Terra non è semplicemente quella di suonare rock'n'roll e atteggiarci da rockstar, ma concentrare le nostre energie per scrivere canzoni che colpiscano direttamente al cuore e alla mente dei nostri fan sparsi per il pianeta...".
