Sorry, James Cameron: NASA Nixes 3-D Camera for Next Mars Rover

Post n°16 pubblicato il 29 Marzo 2011 da mdasvkocne

s next Mars rover with the help of filmmaker James Cameron has been shelved due to a lack of time to get it ready for the mission's November launch.

The camera builder, Malin Space Science Systems of San Diego, Calif., was hoping to use the 3-D imaging system to replace the main fixed focal-length camera on NASA's new .

That 3-D video capability on Mars was backed by Cameron, director of the 2009 box office smash "Avatar" and other films. Cameron also serves as a public engagement co-investigator for Curiosity, now being prepared for its voyage to the Red Planet.

NASA ordered the Malin-Cameron project to stand down after it became clear that the camera could not be installed on Curiosity in time to meet the mission's . The mega-rover is now undergoing final checks at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California for delivery to its launch site in Florida.

Time runs out

While development of the new zoom lens hardware was in the final stages, "insufficient time remained to complete the units and integrate them with the rover in time for its scheduled launch in November 2011," Malin officials said in statement released Friday (March 25).

Malin Space Science Systems will continue to pursue the development of these zoom systems, both to prove out the design and to make the hardware available for possible use on future missions, the company said.

Cameron said he is confident the technology will find a home on a future space probe.

"While Curiosity won't benefit from thethat the zooms enable, I'm certain that this technology will play an important role in future missions," Cameron said in the Malin statement.

The Curiosity rover now being prepped for sendoff to Mars is loaded with an impressive array of research tasks. Given a successful Mars landing of Curiosity, mission planners promise to provide not only first-rate scientific measurements, but also the most breathtaking images and movies of Mars ever recorded, mission officials have said. []

Technical problems

Malin officials said that the company, along with space technology firm MacDonald Dettweiler and Associates, had worked long hours in an effort to complete the systems in time, but encountered a number of technical problems.

"While such problems are typical with spaceflight hardware, in aerospace parlance the zoom schedule was 'success-oriented,' and allowed for few deviations," Malin officials explained.

"Although we are very disappointed that the zoom cameras will not fly, we expect the fixed focal length cameras to achieve all of the primary science objectives of the Mastcam investigation," said Michael Malin the camera's principal investigator and chief of Malin Space Science Systems.

"At the end of the day there just wasn't enough time to disassemble the units, make the changes, put them back together, and get the instruments to JPL in time," said Mike Ravine, the Mastcam project manager at MSSS.

Losing the zoom

A saddened Ravine recounted to SPACE.com the history of the on, then off, then on again status of the zoom lens system.

"I've been thinking about the initial zoom descope in 2007. I remember describing to someone what a disappointment it was to have the zooms cut from the mission," Ravine said in an interview. "They were very sympathetic right up to the point that it came out that we were still going to get to fly four cameras on this big rover to Mars, and the sympathy just evaporated. I know how lucky we are. Sometimes, it's a bit more challenging to connect with that knowledge on an emotional level."

The zoom Mastcams on Mars Science Laboratory would have provided improved operational flexibility, much better stereo imaging, and a 3D motion imaging capability that would bring the public along on Mars exploration, Ravine explained.

"All of the capabilities would be of benefit on future surface missions, be they to Mars, the moon or some asteroid," Ravine said. "We want to finish these cameras for some future use, and we're pursuing potential sources of funding to do that."

APV Engineered Coatings® has launched APV eCoolRoof™, a new cool roof coating system comprised of a Kynar Aquatec® resin-based topcoat and an elastomeric acrylic basecoat.Working together, these two products can provide up to 63 percent increase in life cycle energy savings for a structure.

Akron, OH (PRWEB) February 7, 2011

APV Engineered Coatings® has launched APV eCoolRoof™, a new cool roof coating system comprised of a Kynar Aquatec® resin-based topcoat and an elastomeric acrylic basecoat.Working together, these two products can provide up to 63 percent increase in life cycle energy savings for a structure.

“APV eCoolRoof Topcoat has been engineered to significantly increase the emissivity and total solar reflectance properties of a roof’s surface and sustain it for a minimum of 10 years,” according to Thomas Venarge, president of APV Engineered Coatings. “This field-applied topcoat product is designed to be applied over APV eCoolRoof basecoat to produce the ultimate high performance barrier to the sun’s rays. Our research shows that this product extends the life of a roof by twice as long as a traditional roof coating.”

The eco-friendly APV eCoolRoof has a low VOC content and resists ultraviolet (UV) ray degradation, chalking, water pickup, dirt pickup, staining, chemicals and corrosion, algae and fungal growth along with abrasion. Made in Ohio, the product increases the comfort level of the interior of a structure by providing lower indoor temperatures, which reduces the amount of energy used from cooling systems.

“There are tremendous financial and environmental benefits for building owners using APV eCoolRoof,” says Venarge. “The coating system can be added to a roof in any stage of its life cycle, as long as it is structurally sound. Thus, APV eCoolRoof transforms the existing roof providing an entirely new roof membrane. The products should also increase the life expectancy of facility air conditioners and cooling systems. It’s the ideal product to give an old roof new life.”

The APV eCoolRoof coating system meets or exceeds initial Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) requirements to reflect sunlight and heat away from a structure. The products are currently participating in a three-year certification program of age testing, after which they will qualify for ENERGY STAR® and CRRC ratings.

According to the CRRC, a benefit of a Cool Roof is the reduction in air pollution from the emissions of the roof itself, which can help reduce heat islands around cities and populous areas. These are important considerations for builders, roofing contractors and building owners wishing to make a positive impact on the environment.

Comprehensive APV eCoolRoof SystemThe single coat applications of both the basecoat and topcoat for APV eCoolRoof are field-applied and air dried, requiring no baking. Additional benefits include the white color retention of the glossy coating over years of service, reduction in maintenance costs and the ability to extend the life of a current roof.

The APV eCoolRoof Basecoat is field applied first to fill in pinholes or small cracks in an existing roof, help smooth the roof surface, and serve as a bonding layer for the topcoat. The topcoat is then applied and serves as long-term protection to sustain the reflectivity of the sun’s rays for a minimum of 10 years. The highly-durable topcoat resists chemicals, corrosion, dirt and algae/fungus. Used together, the two products increase the longevity and efficiency of a roof.

“The fluoropolymer technology in APV eCoolRoof provides a long and sustained lifespan for a roof,” says Venarge. “This product increases the surface’s reflectivity and emissivity ability and successfully sustains it for a minimum of 10 years. In comparison, over a 20 year period, the reduction of CO2 emissions of an APV eCoolRoof versus that of an elastomeric acrylic on an area the size of an average city block is equivalent to taking 51 cars off the street.”

Dependable Commercial ProductAvailable nationwide directly from APV Engineered Coatings for use on commercial projects such as high rise buildings, refrigerated warehouses, domed facilities, factories and stadiums, APV eCoolRoof is warranted for 10 years for reflectivity. The product may be applied over a multitude of surfaces, PVC, asphalt, rubber (including EPDM), metal, SBS & APP modified bitumen, single-ply, and polyurethane foam systems.

The Kynar Aquatec resin used in APV eCoolRoof is a tough, engineered thermoplastic offering a unique balance of properties to withstand harsh thermal, chemical and UV environmental conditions. Manufactured by Arkema Inc., the resin provides APV eCoolRoof the ability to resist abrasions, dirt and the growth of mold and mildew.

Founded in Akron, Ohio in 1878, APV Engineered Coatings manufactures innovative, custom engineered products that are sold worldwide to a wide variety of industries. For more information on products and services, visit, or call 800-772-3452.

APV eCoolRoof products are sold under a trademark license from ARKEMA INC. which is the owner of the KYNAR and KYNAR AQUATEC Trademarks.

AOL steps up news, ad effort with Huffington Post

Post n°14 pubblicato il 08 Febbraio 2011 da mdasvkocne

AOL Inc., once the king of dial-up Internet access known for its ubiquitous CDs and "You've got mail" greeting in its inboxes, is stepping up its efforts in news and online advertising with a $315 million deal to buy news hub Huffington Post.

The acquisition announced Monday is among the most aggressive strategic moves engineered by AOL CEO Tim Armstrong in an effort to reshape a fallen Internet icon.

Perhaps just as important as picking up a news site that ranks as one of the top 10 current events and global news sites, AOL will be adding Huffington Post co-founder and media star Arianna Huffington to its management team.

After the acquisition closes later this year, Huffington will run AOL's growing array of content, which includes popular technology sites Engadget and TechCrunch, local news sites Patch.com and online mapping service Mapquest.

The price that AOL is paying is "really just the hiring fee to get Arianna," said technology analyst Rob Enderle. "This is one of those out-of-left-field moves that actually makes a lot of sense. This could put AOL back on the map."

Putting Arianna Huffington into a position of power could also eventually threaten Armstrong's job security if AOL still struggles, Enderle said.

In a blog post about the deal, Arianna Huffington praised Armstrong's vision for AOL and said they were on the same page as they discussed their ambitions for online news. "We were practically finishing each other's sentences," Huffington wrote. She said the deal was signed at the Super Bowl in Dallas, which she and Armstrong attended.

The Huffington Post, which now draws 25 million monthly visitors, has built its popularity by bringing together news from a wide selection of other media outlets, linking to articles and video on everything from politics to style to food. It even has a new section on divorce.

It combines that type of aggregation with original work by its own small staff and blog posts from celebrity contributors who work for free in return for a platform to express their opinions. Robert Redford has written for the site, along with Bill Gates, Barack Obama and several university presidents.

Armstrong, a former Google Inc. executive, has been trying to turn AOL into a go-to place for a wide variety of news since he was hired to turn around the company in April 2009 while it was still a part of Time Warner Inc. The makeover is designed to give people a reason to visit AOL's websites more frequently to help boost ad sales.

At the same time, Armstrong has laid off hundreds of employees to try to boost AOL's financial performance and stock price. It has been a slog so far. AOL lost more than $780 million last year, largely because of accounting charges, and the company's stock is now worth slightly less than after it was spun off from Time Warner Inc. 14 months ago.

The deal "will create a next-generation American media company with global reach that combines content, community, and social experiences for consumers," Armstrong said in a statement announcing the deal.

Founded in 2005, Huffington Post is owned by Arianna Huffington, Kenneth Lerer and a group of other investors. They will get $300 million of the purchase price in cash.

Gartner analyst Andrew Frank called the deal "strategically sensible" for AOL. It's risky, he said, in the sense that media acquisitions are inherently risky these days.

"There is a lot of effort ahead for online media to recapture the glory days when media was booming business," he said. "Deals like this offer hope. On the other hand you can't really dismiss the somewhat uneven record AOL has had with acquisitions."

On a conference call with analysts, AOL Chief Financial Officer Arthur Minson said the company expects Huffington Post will generate $50 million in revenue this year, with a profit margin of 30 percent.

By comparison, AOL drew $2.42 billion in revenue last year. About 53 percent came from ads, and most of the rest from its dwindling base of dial-up Internet subscribers.

Minson said the deal will save AOL $20 million a year by allowing it to eliminate operations that overlap with Huffington Post.

If it wins regulatory approval as expected, the deal would likely close in late March or early April.

Armstrong has been an aggressive deal maker since his arrival, but this marks by far the biggest acquisition of his tenure. Various published reports quoting unidentified people have also said he has talked to private equity firms about the possibility of trying to buy Yahoo Inc., another struggling Internet pioneer that remains a household name. Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, though, has shown little interest in working with AOL.

AOL had just a 5.3 percent share of the U.S. display advertising revenue in 2010, down from 6.8 percent in 2009, according to eMarketer. Facebook, meanwhile, accounted for 13.6 percent of display revenue last year, up from 7.3 percent in 2009.

Huffington Post grew quickly from startup to online colossus. Over time, it launched city-specific pages and developed a roster of sections such as food and books. The work of its 70-person paid staff is augmented by content from news outlets and 6,000 bloggers who write for free.

Shares of AOL, which is based in New York, fell 12 cents to $21.82 in midday trading Monday.

U.S. discussing transition plan with Egyptians

Post n°13 pubblicato il 07 Febbraio 2011 da mdasvkocne

Tag: alone

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. officials said on Thursday they are discussing with Egyptians a variety of ways of moving toward an orderly transition of power in Egypt, which may lead to a speedier departure of President Hosni Mubarak.

The New York Times reported the Obama administration is talking with Egyptian officials a proposal for Mubarak to resign immediately.

The White House would not confirm the Times report but said discussions have been under way with Egyptians in an attempt to resolve the 10-day crisis in Egypt.

Violence has raged between pro- and anti-Mubarak demonstrators after Mubarak declared he would resist demands to leave now and would remain in power until September.

Tommy Vietor, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said President Barack Obama has said now is the time to begin "a peaceful, orderly and meaningful transition, with credible, inclusive negotiations."

"We have discussed with the Egyptians a variety of different ways to move that process forward, but all of those decisions must be made by the Egyptian people," Vietor said.

More than one option was under discussion, a senior administration official said.

Obama and his top aides have carefully avoided calling for Mubarak's resignation, instead insisting that an orderly transition "must begin now" and raising doubts about Mubarak's plans to stay in power until September.

The Times reported that under a proposal discussed with high-level Egyptian officials, Mubarak would turn power over to a transitional government headed by Vice President Omar Suleiman with the support of the Egyptian military.

Vice President Joe Biden spoke to Suleiman on Thursday and urged that "credible, inclusive negotiations begin immediately in order for Egypt to transition to a democratic government."

Biden urged the Egyptian government to ensure no violence breaks out and appealed for the release of detained journalists and human rights advocates as the possibility of a new round of rioting loomed on Friday.

SENATE CALLS FOR TURNOVER

U.S. lawmakers applied pressure on the long-time U.S. ally, calling on Mubarak to transfer power to an inclusive caretaker government in a Senate resolution that went slightly beyond Obama's public position.

Two influential senators, Republican John McCain and Democrat John Kerry, pushed the proposal, which expanded on Obama's demand for a transition in Egypt to begin now. It was approved by the Senate on a voice vote.

The document calls for Mubarak to immediately begin an "orderly and peaceful transition to a democratic political system."

This should include "the transfer of power to an inclusive interim government in coordination with leaders from Egypt's opposition, civil society and military" to enact reforms needed to hold free and fair elections this year.

Kerry said on the Senate floor that the Egyptian government should move to an interim government "over these next days."

McCain expressed fears of a bloodbath and emphasized that Egypt's military was the most respected institution there but it risked turning people against it unless it acted "as a genuine peacemaker."

Amid concerns that a wave of protests that erupted in Tunisia and then Egypt could spread to other Middle Eastern capitals, Obama phoned Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to follow up his pledges of reform with concrete actions.

The White House said Obama also told Saleh it is imperative that Yemen take forceful action against al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Clinton spoke to Jordan's King Abdullah -- another close U.S. ally -- on Thursday to discuss Egypt and to express support for his own recent reforms, part of a wave of change by authoritarian governments across the Middle East seeking to head off Egypt-style unrest.
