DIPLOMACY: Buenos Aires denounces the "militarization" British Falklands
AFP - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday urged Argentina and the United Kingdom to avoid any "escalation" in their dispute over the Falklands shortly after meeting with Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman.
Mr. Ban "expressed concern about the exchange of increasingly strident" between the two countries and "expressed the hope that the governments of Argentina and the UK will avoid an escalation in dispute and resolve their differences peacefully and through dialogue ".
The Secretary General reiterated that it remained willing to offer "good offices to resolve the dispute if both countries request it," said a statement from the UN.
Shortly before, Mr. Timerman told the press be "came to the United Nations to denounce the militarization of the South Atlantic by the British."
"Britain is currently the largest military power within the zone" where the Falklands, he said. He said he "transmitted (in Ban) data on nuclear matters, nuclear weapons". He did not specify the charges of Argentina.
The UK just sent to the Falklands and the Prince William has decided to send a new warship, ensuring that it was "routine operations". It could also send, according to British press, a nuclear submarine.
Buenos Aires Thursday announced Friday its intention to present a formal complaint with the Security Council of the UN denouncing the "militarization" British.
The Falklands, located in the extreme south of Argentina, are under control of the United Kingdom since 1833, when a British gunboat chased by the Argentine authorities.
The archipelago is the issue of a war of words between the two countries approach the 30th anniversary of the Anglo-Argentine conflict over sovereignty of the islands (April 2 to June 14, 1982).
