Fostering a positive attitude reduces the stress response. Reframing the traits you use to describe yourself, incorporating laughter, doing a good deed, and keeping a gratitude-blessing journal all will go a long way in growing a positive attitude.

REFRAME the labels you use to describe yourself. Make an assessment list of your traits, the negative as well as the positive. For years I believed that I was too shy to be assertive, all I wanted to do was to be invisible, just part of the woodwork. I believed that I would never be able to form meaningful goals that I would be able to accomplish. I was destined to be a nothing, a pile of horse manure.

Replace the negative labels with positive ones. Look for the exceptions. What is the positive side of the trait you claim? For me "too shy" becomes, I am a caring person and I am a good listener. As a shy person, I can take my time to discover and learn, and then form small, doable goals. Being a person of faith, I claim that I am a kind and lovable person because God created me. I am not alone- I am dearly loved by my Creator.

LAUGH and smile. Start your day by looking at yourself in the mirror. Repeat positive affirmations about yourself. For me an affirmation might be "I have what it takes to get up and go." "God loves me." "Today I'm going to laugh."

Find things during the day that are funny and laugh. Do funny doodles. Post humorous cartoons or funny quotes where you are able to see them. Laugh when you see them. If at the moment, you don't feel like laughing, fake it.

DO A GOOD DEED. You might be surprised how doing good deeds lifts your spirits and helps in maintaining a positive attitude. Your acts of kindness could be spontaneous. For instance, you see someone struggling with something, putting groceries in their vehicle, having trouble dialing a phone, whatever it might be, approach, look the person in the eye and smile. Say something like, "Here, let me help you." As soon as you have completed the act, walk away.

Do something for a coworker, your neighbor, or a friend. Bring them a magazine, flowers, a care note, a food dish. What sparks your imagination?

KEEP A GRATITUDE/BLESSING JOURNAL. Your journal could be hard copy or electronic. Writing in your journal on gratitude and blessing is done at the end of the day. Make a commitment to write every day and to choose three items for which you are grateful or you find a blessing. Be specific and notice the subtleties. So it's not I'm grateful for my husband, rather the twinkle in his eye as he held my хэнд is a great comfort. I know that he loves me.

Be blessed by growing a positive attitude. Your stress level will go down, and you will be healthier, as well as being a good friend. You will love yourself more, and think positively about yourself and the world.
