The USTA has announced the official launch of QuickStart Tennis, an innovative new play format that will help to get more children 10 years of age and under into the game. The US Open tennis tournament is chronologically the fourth and final event of the Grand Slam tennis tournaments. US Open tennis is, in effect, a combination of two tournaments - the men's and women's events, which until 1968 were played at separate venues. With the advent of the Open Era it was decided to combine all championships and to host one tournament at a single venue. Men's doubles was played in conjunction with men's singles at the Newport Casino for the first seven years, 1881-86, before it began moving to various sites. In fact, the five major events of the U.S. National Championships/ US Open have been played at nine different sites throughout their histories, including the USTA National Tennis Center. Men's doubles has been played at eight of those sites. The U.S. Mixed Doubles Championship officially began in 1892 and was played in conjunction with the women's singles and doubles until 1921. Starting in 1921, mixed doubles was combined with the men's doubles program of the U.S. National Championships. The US Open is preceded by the other three majors - the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon, but unlike the other events, the US Open has introduced a final set tiebreak. In the other Grand Slam events the fifth set (men) and the third set (women) continue until one player wins by two games. |
