Alnus Serrulata is a native plant species derived from the birch family. This shrub with multiple trunks when fully grown, provides a great backdrop for any landscape. The shrub can grow as tall as 12-20 feet and has bright grayish brown bark. The shrub develops dark green foliage during early summer, which later turns into a glossy yellow tinged with reddish brown color in early autumn. The flowers of Alnus Serrulata are purple and develop in clusters. The shrub also bears a fruit that resembles a tiny woody cone and persists all winter until early spring. This plant is native to the South Eastern United states of America, where it is often found to be growing along river banks.

Plant features

Alnus Serrulata is a perennial shrub that grows anywhere from 10-30 feet. The leaves are elliptical and deciduous. The characteristic appearance of the Alnus shrub is a serration of the leaves. The leaves do appear dark green during summer with very fine hairs underneath each leaf. Being a perennial shrub, there is foliage throughout autumn and into late winter. The flowers are slim cylindrical and occur in clusters. These flowers usually called catkins, are often arranged closely along the central stem. The shrub also bears a fruit that is brown and cone shaped.

Blooms of the plant vary in color from reddish, green, and brown. Blooms usually occur in early autumn, and can be seen as early as March or April.

Distribution

Alnus Serrulata is an easy plant to grow and is widely distributed in most states in the country. However, its native distribution is in Florida and Texas where it often grows naturally along streams, riverbanks, wet swamps, and moist landscapes. For the gardeners or landscaper who wishes to grow this shrub, it is important to know that the plant does require a lot of water to thrive.

Growth conditions

Even though Alnus Serrulata is easy to grow, it does require a fair amount of water. It will not thrive in arid conditions or dry soil. The shrub prefers full sun but will also grow well in conditions of partial shade. The soil must be wet and moist, but should also drain well. Alnus Serrulata grows best at neutral pH but sometimes will tolerate slightly acidic or alkaline soil conditions. The best soil to grow Alnus Serrulata is wet sandy loams and peats.

In general, the mature plant is not prone to infestation or other insects but it does have a weak stem that often breaks.

Advantages of growing Aldus Serrulata

For the gardener growing Aldus has several advantages. The shrub is very resistant to flooding with water, attracts a wide variety of bird and insect life, and also bears a fruit which is preferred by deers.

The one minor negative of the shrub is that the stems often break and the water requirement is moderate. However, its pretty catkins and colorful bark more than make up for its few negatives.
