La rassegna Magnum’s First. La prima mostra di Magnum al Museo Diocesano Carlo Maria Martini di Milano, espone le foto della prima mostra dei fotografi dell’Agenzia Magnum – intitolata Gesicht der Zeit (Il volto del tempo) – tenuta in cinque città austriache tra il 1955 e il 1956. Incredibilmente tutti gli scatti furono abbandonati in una cantina di Innsbruck e ritrovati cinquant’anni dopo, nel 2006, ancora chiusi in una cassa.

Come racconta la curatrice Andrea Holzherr: “Ciò che trovammo nelle casse era, a dir poco, sorprendente: una serie di vecchi pannelli di legno su cui erano montate delle fotografie molto sporche. Perciò, il mio primo contatto con la vecchia mostra somigliava più alla scoperta di una mummia che a quella di un tesoro. I materiali erano in pessime condizioni: le foto erano ricoperte di polvere, sporco e muffa, e avevano perfino un odore di stantio!”. “La mostra – prosegue Holzherr – è un rompicapo, un mistero, e rimane la prima mostra in assoluto di foto Magnum di cui si abbia notizia! La sua esistenza è la prova che, sin dall’inizio, la Magnum era diversa dalle altre agenzie fotografiche. Dagli esordi, con il programma di mostre ed eventi, la Magnum difendeva il valore della foto come documento”.
