Replacing Old Pillows and Duvets: How Often?

Do you remember the last time you changed your pillows and duvet? If it has been a long time, keep reading. Your bedding is much more than something to lie on, it also takes care of our health. So, to stay in good shape, we need to take good care of our duvets and pillows and change them regularly.

If you think it is time to change, take a look at the awesome collection at linensandhutch.com to buy top-quality and great-looking bedding.

According to the Sleep Council, you should change your pillows every two years.  Although, on average, people will stay with their old pillows and duvets for much more than that.

We all love the luxurious satisfaction we get from the fresh comfort and clean smell of a new set of pillows. But after years of constant use, your pillows will begin to lose their supportive and clean structure, possibly causing dust particles dead skin cells, and infections, which can be detrimental to your health.

There are a variety of steps you can take to help keep your pillow in tip-top condition for the recommended two years of age.

First, try to plump them every day to even them out and keep them from slouching. You can also use pillow protectors, which provide a protective barrier against dirt and oil but be sure to wash and change pillow protectors and pillowcases weekly for maximum cleanliness.

Do not be afraid to wash your pillows. You can put most pillows in a washer and dryer every six months to remove dead skin cells and dust particles. However, be sure to always refer to the label for specific washing instructions.

If you want an easy way to test if you need to change your pillow, try this test. Just keep the pillow balanced on your arm. If it bends on either side of your arm, it is asking for a change. However, if it stays strong enough and holds its shape, it’s good for a good night’s sleep.

The Sleep Council recommends that the mist be replaced every five years, although the reality is much different.

The quality of your duvet will also determine how long you keep it. Naturally, high-quality duvets last longer than others. If you’re not sure if your duvet needs to be changed, look for the following signs:

  • It feels thin and limp because the padding is compressed, which means it cannot hold in air and can’t maintain body temperature properly.
  • It feels lumpy due to the uneven distribution of the filler. This can happen naturally or after too much washing.
  • The padding comes out from rips, splits of seams, or thinning of the cover.

Just like your pillow, you can take steps to maintain your duvet and ensure it lasts a full five years. Look for a microfiber duvet or a cotton cover feather duvet as they are more breathable and keep you cool, meaning your duvet will stay clean longer.

And, like pillows, most duvets can be machine washed (but not dry clean). Because of their size, it’s not always possible to wash them at home, so you may need to take it to the local laundry, although this should only be done once or twice a year.

Washing and drying your duvet regularly will help prevent the formation of these pesky dust particles and dead skin cells, which can trigger allergies.

You can also just hang your duvet on the clothesline on a dry, airy day and let it out for a few hours, which can make a world of difference.
