The UK’s New Visa Rules: How is the Government Changing Immigration Policies?

The government is making changes to certain rules regarding who is allowed to come to live and work in Britain.

Official figures reveal that in 2022, net migration reached up to 745,000, prompting ministers to face pressure to take action on immigration control.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has described the current migration levels as “too high.”

What are the New Immigration Rules?

Most individuals interested in working in the UK will still need to apply for a visa through the Points-Based System (PBS).

However, starting in spring 2024, they will need to offer a high-paying job to secure a work visa.

They will be required to earn a minimum of £38,700, which is approximately 50% more than the current minimum salary of £26,200.

This requirement will not apply to certain jobs, such as those in health and social care.

However, in this sector, foreign care workers will not be able to bring their family dependents.

The points system was first introduced in 2008 by the Labour government, initially targeting migrants from non-EU countries. The Conservatives made significant changes to it following the Brexit vote.

The current PBS, covering both EU and non-EU migrants, was launched at the end of 2020.
