Donaco International, a Southeast Asian border casino operator, said in a Friday filing that it had returned to positive earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) for the six months ending Dec. 31. The company added that it “ach achieved positive EBITDA in the last three months of the half-year, driven by proactive cost control strategies to weather COVID-19.”
Donaco posted positive group EBITDA of A$200,000 ($0.2 million) in the July-December period, compared to A$13.8 million in the same period a year earlier. The company confirmed group EBITDA of A$2.7 million in the October-December period of 2020.
In a separate announcement on the company’s latest results, Donaco’s management said it was “cautious about the impact of COVID-19 as DNA Star Vegas and Aristo International hotels are operating with limited operations.”
Donaco operates two casino properties in Asia: the Star Vegas Resort and Club (pictured), a casino resort on the border between Thailand and Cambodia, and the Aristo International of Lao Kai on the border between Vietnam and China. The Vietnam-China and Cambodia-Thailand borders remain closed, affecting the performance of both casinos, according to the company.
Donaco added in January that the property remained “open at limited capacity with additional protocols in place to minimize the risk of the virus,” despite the outbreak of COVID-19 around a wide range of areas where Starvegas operates. However, the company acknowledged that the situation had reduced the number of Starvegas visitors.
“Donaco expects a temporary and short-term impact, along with a positive long-term outlook for the business, as the spread of COVID-19 vaccines grows rapidly worldwide.”
