Göteborg University Advanced Lecture Course

The
periodontally compromised patient

During
the first 25 years of implant dentistry proceeded at a very slow pace,
conditioned by  a dogmatic clinical
approach. In the last 15 years  advances
have been made in implant design and surface that while offering many solutions
have also created many new venues in implant therapy.

This
is a comprehensive course that will present a clinical interpretation of the
most up to date research and evidence based advancements in periodontology and
implant dentistry today.

The
first day with Prof. Jan Lindhe will take into consideration the latest
developements in the understanding of the pathogenisis of periodontal disease
beyond the traditional microbiological approach following up the most recent
advances in immunology and host reaction and leading up to the role that
periodontitis plays as a risk factor in systemic disease.

It
will than be discussed how these changes have altered the scientific basis for
the treatment of periodontal disease how this will effect our everyday clinical
approach.

On
the second day with Prof. Jan Wennstrom we will look at treatment planning
strategies in patients with severely compromised dentition and an in depth
analysis will be made on the efficacy of the various treatment  modalities available to us with regards to
infection control.

Indications
will also be given on time management with regards to infection control with
new protocols that will decrease the amount of time that the patients will
spend in the chair for periodontal treatment.

The
afternoon session with Prof. Tord  Berglundh
will be an in depth analysis of the group of patients that are at higher risk
for the development and progression of periodontal disease.

On
the third day with Prof. Ramberg we will look at one of the most critical
issues in periodontology and implant dentistry today. Maintenance therapy is
where are long term success lies and often the failure that we have is  due to a lack of planning and implimentation
of proper maintenance therapy protocols base on sound scientific principles.

In
the afternoon we will look at the soft tissue integration. Prof. Abrahamsson
will elucidate mucosal attatchment around titanium implants and how these
tissues compare to the supracrestal periodontal structures and how these
tissues condition the esthetics around implants. The biological understanding of
the periimplant soft tissues is the key to predictable esthetics in implant
dentistry.

On
the last day with Prof. Jan Wennstrom we will confront the complex problem of
implant therapy in periodontal patients. How and when to use with success implants in such patients present a challenge
for clinicians that calls for a scientific
enidence based approach.

In
the afternoon with Prof. Berglundh we will look at the problem of
periimplantitis and periodontitis and how perimplantitis is changing with new
implant designs.
