This year, the official residence of the Seoul Mayor will be undergoing renovations. Before that, the city has decided to open the residence to the public until October of this year. The redidence is located in Hyehwa-dong, Jongno-gu. It was first built by the Japanese in 1941 as a two -story wooden building and used as a private residence until 1959.

After that, it was used as the official residence of the Mayor for 35 years. Then it was occupied as the official residence of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. To conserve the relics of the Seoul City Wall, the official residence was moved to the temporary official residence situated in Eunpyeong-gu at the end of the last year.

You can explore the residence grounds and relax in the yard with its lush green grass or go explore the neighborhood. Hyehwamun (also known as Northeast Gate) is one of the 8 great gates of Seoul in the Fortress Wall which surrounded the city in the Joseon Dynasty. Hyehwamun was originally built in 1396. In 1928, during Japanese occupation, the gate was brought down to make room for a street car line but was rebuilt in 1992.
