NEW FRIOUR NETWORK MAGAZINE PROJECT:

"THE EARTH CHARTER"

This is a call to send artistic contributions around the four basic principles of the earth charter:

I. Respect and care for the community of life.

II. Ecological integrity.

III. Social and economic Justice.

IV. Democracy, nonviolence, and peace.

Free size and medium (all visual expressions and poetry / texts)

Deadline is June 30, 2005.

Contributions will be united in a new issue of Friour Network Magazine.

A copy of the zine will be send to all contributors after the deadline.

Maybe it is interesting when you send me a contribution to specify for which principle it is meant. You are encouraged to work on all 4 of them because for me it is clear that

these 4 principles are like the 4 elements, so united, and they sound like common sense or a new manifesto (grafted on older ones) to save the planet from its present state of mind and action. In a way it is.

I got the idea for this project from Olivier Urbain, the founder of the T:AP (Transcend: Art  & Peace) network during one of our many email exchanges.

ARTI-SMOKING

Arti-smoking invites artists to submit artworks that commemorate tobacco victims and bring awareness of danger of tobacco smoking to the public. All submitted artworks will be exhibited in the Arti-Smoking Gallery on its website and selected works will be exhibited in a venue in Toronto, Canada during the summer of 2005. The submitted works will be kept by Arti-Smoking’s archives for future exhibits. Any medium including net based art is welcome. Size of work: 8.5"x11" or smaller. Exhibit Period : Ongoing at Arti-Smoking Virtual Gallery and at a venue in Toronto, Canada during summer 2005. All artists give rights and consent to Arti-Smoking to use images of artwork for publicity and promotion. All submitted artwork will be kept by Arti-Smoking’s archive. Arti-Smoking is a registered non-profit organization incorporated in Canada. It uses art projects and creative methods to enhance public awareness of the danger of smoking and the epidemic magnitude of deaths from tobacco uses (currently over 5,000,000 each year globally).

This call from Mail Art is part of an action project for urban intervention. Its goal is to claim the street as open space, a place to meet, exchange ideas and act collectively, versus the instituctionalised concept of a public space, which tries to turn streets into mere areas of transit, aeptic, constantly guarded and hierarchically managed based on elitist interests.

The contributed mails will be shown on the street, lending a human touch for the perusal of the anonymous passers by who daily inhabit the space

The past months the 17th "Independent Arts"-Festival have received lots of
support and interest nationally and internationally. In such a way that we
are able to present on Saturday 16 April 2005, an event which highlights
several different art networks such as home-tape, Mail-Art, street art,
small press, ... with on top of that video art, performance and fine art. As
such, the "Independent Arts"-Festival is unique in its kind.

[01] International Mail-Art meeting:

Several Mail-artists from all over the world are part of the program with a
performance, exhibition, . Visiting Mail-artists get the possibility to be
creative on ATC's, Fluxus Bucks, artistamp sheets, blank paper, . which will
be present at the Festival. This Mail-Art meeting gives you the possibility
to meet your contacts and get in contact with many other artists active in
other networks.

Visitors to the Mail-Art meeting (known by now) are:
Gik Juri (Russia), Reid Wood (U.S.A.), Henning Mittendorf (Germany), Susanna
Lakner (Germany), Peter Küstermann (Germany), Giancarlo Da Lio & Tiziani
Baracchi (Italy), Dobrica Kamperelic (Yugoslavia), Pascal Lenoir (France),
Madison Morrison (Taiwan), Ingrid Van Kogelenberg (Belgium), Guido Vermeulen
(Belgium), Belgium networkers and many others .

Interested to
Contact us if you need some information for a place to stay. A selection of
trips and activities are being offered to foreign visitors and artists.
Starting Friday afternoon and finishing Sunday evening. Participating all
trips and activities is not obligatory, check webpage for latest
information.

an assembling project among street artists.

Mail-Art.
- Reid Wood (U.S.A.): exhibition of new work, Artists Trading Cards,
rubberstamps, performance and exhibition of artworks from the Sztuka Fabryka
Archive.
- Luc Fierens (Belgium): "Belgium Fluxus" rubberstamp multiple (Stamp Art
Gallery 1997) & other related (rubberstamp) material.
- Larry Angelo (U.S.A.): exhibition of his carved stamps.
- Henning Mittendorf (Germany): workshop eraser carving and exhibition.
- Susanna Lakner (Germany): workshop eraser carving and exhibition.
- Ingrid Van Kogelenberg (Belgium): workshop eraser carving.

In two weeks the call for proposals will be closed. If you want to be part
of the official program with your artworks, send your proposal with full
information to:  art@sztuka-fabryka.be
Due to lack of space and money also, Sztuka Fabryka and the co-organisers
have to make a selection in the proposals based upon the general concept,
atmosphere and situation of the Festival. There is still some space for a
few participants and we are looking for a complete exhibition of original
artworks from each participant, not a few postcards only.

 [04] Mail-Art project "Happy Stamper":

During the Festival we want to introduce our visitors in the world of
rubberstamp art. Therefore we would like to ask to send us your
rubberstamps. The rubberstamp design does not have to be specifically yours.
All kind of rubberstamps are welcome. If the rubberstamp is not designed by
you, please give us a little description of who made the stamp or where it
came from. You do not have to send us the stamp with the handle, we are able
to put the rubberstamps on a handle ourselves. Thanks in advance for all
contributions. Deadline: March 2005 - no size limit - no return - catalogue
for any participator.

The 17th "Independent Arts"-Festival is curated by Sztuka Fabryka in
co-operation with the Cultural Centre of the city Sint-Niklaas, the city
council Sint-Niklaas, the Academy of Fine Arts (Stedelijke academie voor
schone kunsten) and O.J.C. Kompas.

Location: "De Vierkante zaal" - Van Britsomstraat - Sint-Niklaas - Belgium
"De Vierkante zaal" is the exhibition hall of the Academy of Fine Arts
(Stedelijke academie voor schone kunsten), situated in a building complex
which also comprises the City Theatre (Stadsschouwburg).
