SYRIA - ISRAEL: Report: the Syrians treated in hospitals of the "enemy" of Israel

A Syrian teenager is lying on the bed of an Israeli hospital. Screens display vital signs. The boy is between life and death.

Avidan Landau nurse at Ziv Hospital in Safed in northern Israel, enters the room to check the level of the infusion. "It's just a kid, not my enemy," said the man. "A child can not be an enemy."

Since the beginning of the Syrian uprising, there are more than two years, Israela - until recently - been careful not to take a public stand in the conflict that rages in the & rsquo , across the border from the north-east. Israel and Syria are officially at war for decades.

But in recent months, at least two Israeli hospitals have received a handful of Syrians seriously injured. The Ziv Hospital, nearly 100 patients Syrians arrived in the border of the Golan have been treated since February.

One of them, who agreed to talk to FRANCE 24 on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad after returning home, explains that the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) cooperate with the Israeli army at the border.

"The fighters [Syrian rebels] are unarmed. They put us in an area where the Israeli army can come to us. Then the Israelis come pick us up. Frankly, I was suprised that Israel collects us. "

On another bed, a girl was seriously wounded in the right leg. She had to undergo a partial amputation. His mother, who was also injured, was lying in another. Hiding her face, she is grateful to Israel. "If someone in my country asked me where I was treated, I say Israel. I thank her doctors and wish them much success. I can not say much more, "she says.

After care, return to Syria

Since the outbreak of the Syrian uprising in March 2011, more than 110,000 people were killed and more than two million Syrians fled, mainly in neighboring countries: Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

Israel refuses to accept refugees from a country with which it is technically still at war, but also to prevent an influx of refugees. If patients Syrians are treated in Israeli hospitals, they are not allowed to stay once restored.

"We call on the Israeli army. It sends ambulances to get patients back to Syria and if I understand. In fact I'm not sure of their final destination, "said Dr. Oscar Embon, director of hospital Ziv.

Physicians ensure that there is no question of politics here, that their efforts are not a humanitarian gesture in response to the atrocities taking place in the neighboring country and that e consumption save anyone. They recognize, however, that all Syrian patients treated here belong to the anti-Assad camp.

Israel wants the "bad guys" to go away

In a recent breakup with public neutrality observed by Israel in the Syrian conflict, the Israeli ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, told the "Jerusalem Post" Israel wanted the departure of Assad since the uprising began.

In an excerpt from the interview to be published Friday in the Israeli daily, Michael Oren said that the "evil" supported by Iran [Ally Bashar al- Assad, Ed] are worse for Israel rebels backed by Islamist extremist groups.

Michael Oren's statement is the first public recognition of how Israel strategically considers the Syrian conflict.

"This is completely new as far officially - or at least publicly - the Israeli government has never expressed a preference between the rebels and re , regime [Syria], "says Gallagher Fenwick, FRANCE 24's correspondent in the region. "What, however, remains uncertain at this stage is whether Israela helped or will help the opposition to the downfall of President Bashar al-Assad."

The UN still deadlocked

Diplomats from countries holding a veto in the Security Council of the UN held several meetings in New York this week to try to develop a resolution to die destroy the Syrian chemical weapons.

While Israel and Syria have maintained the status quo since the 1973 war, the Jewish state is now showing concern about the chemical weapons stockpiles of Assad weapons most dissuasive the Syrian regime against its neighbor with nuclear weapons. While Israel has never confirmed nor denied, possess such weapons, most analysts agree that it is the only nation to hold the Middle East.

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear, especially to the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, the international community must show its determination to enforce the red line" says Gallagher Fenwick, that would be the use of chemical weapons in Syria. "Netanyahu wants international efforts are coupled with a clear military threat."

While diplomats squabble over the texts of resolutions, thousands of miles away on a hospital bed with clean sheets and colored in the eyes smiling Mickey on the wall, a teenager is still fighting against death. If he recovers, he may have to return to his homeland ravaged by war. But for now, he is safe in the hands of the "enemy."
