Il black metal è un sotto-genere della musica Heavy metal e rappresenta una delle sue cosiddette correnti estreme.

Sviluppatosi soprattutto nei paesi scandinavi (in particolare in Svezia e Norvegia) è nato da un'estremizzazione della NWOBHM, ossia dai Venom, il black metal deve la sua paternità ad altre due band nate nella prima metà degli anni '80, gli Hellhammer e i Bathory. Mentre i testi si rifanno a temi satanici, blasfemi e cruenti la musica, almeno inizialmente si discosta dal resto dell'heavy metal per una maggiore oscurità e una produzione scarna. Nato come genere underground riceve una discreta attenzione a livello mediatico e di vendite negli anni '90 grazie alla scena dei paesi scandinavi. In particolare oltre ai Mayhem una menzione speciale meritano i Darkthrone, anch'essi norvegesi, che dopo la pubblicazione di Soulside Journey, un album Death Metal, si ritrovarono poi nel giro di pochi mesi a rinnegare il passato, prendere nomi da guerra (se Aarseth era Euronymous, Nagel divenne Fenriz, ecc..) e cominciare a produrre musica volutamente minimale. Con loro gli Emperor, formatisi anch'essi sulla scia dei Mayhem, dopo che i componenti ebbero abbandonato i loro progetti Death.

Il fenomeno da strettamente musicale si evolse in un vero e proprio stile di vita, i cui valori divennero la misantropia, il nichilismo, il satanismo, il nazismo, l'anticristianesimo, quest'ultimo causato da una volontà di riscoprire la vera religione pagana scandinava, oscurata e abbattuta dai missionari cristiani (basti pensare che molti sovrani dovettero scegliere tra la testa e il cristianesimo). Le tematiche del black, quindi, sono quasi sempre "oscure", "occulte".

Purtroppo fu una delle "creature" di Euronymous a decretare la sua fine. Christian Vikernes (che cambiò subito il nome in Varg), one-man-band del progetto Burzum, nonché bassista per un breve periodo proprio dei Mayhem, uccise per un motivo non chiaro il suo mentore, delitto che fu soltanto la punta dell'iceberg di una serie di atti di violenza che portarono ad avere problemi con la giustizia altri nomi noti del panorama. Il gesto più comune che questi compivano erano gli incendi ai danni di chiese. In quel periodo erano all'ordine del giorno, in Norvegia. Forse è anche per questo che il fenomeno ebbe l'impatto mondiale che è giunto fino ai giorni nostri. Le morti, gli arresti, e gli incendi fecero sì che si parlasse di questi uomini e della loro musica su tutte le riviste specializzate nel giro di pochissimo tempo.
