Se una band può essere definita il simbolo della NWOBHM, senza citare i Maiden, tale band non può che essere quella dei Saxon, gruppo che da ormai 25 anni sta portando avanti il suo credo senza fronzolo alcuno. Il gruppo nacque dall'unione di due gruppetti underground che si esibivano in Inghilterra alla fine degli anni 70, ovvero i SOB e i Coast. Nel primo militavano un chitarrista e un bassista di "discreto" talento, che rispondevano ai nomi di Graham Oliver e Steve Dawson, mentre nel secondo combo comparivano il cantante Peter "Biff" Byford e il chitarrista Paul Quinn. Dalla citata fusione nacque una lineup che comprendeva i 4 musicisti appena nominati (tutti già oltre i 25 anni), più il batterista Pete Gill, anche lui ventisettenne, lineup che avrebbe preso il nome di "Son of a Bitch", nome che però fu cambiato pochissimi anni dopo in Saxon. La carriera primigenia dei neonati Sassoni si svolgeva ancora nei classici Rock Clubs e nei concerti minori, a supporto tra gli altri della Ian Gillian band e degli Heavy Metal Kids. Visto che però la classe non era acqua, questo nome, Saxon, cominciava a girare frequentemente per la bocca degli appassionati, tant'è che la band, incoraggiata da questo fatto, iniziò a registrare i primi demo, pur con difficoltà in quanto, sebbene famosi nell'underground, non era assolutamente facile trovare una casa discografica pronta a scommettere su degli, in fondo, illustri e perfetti sconosciuti. Furono mesi di difficili ricerche, fino a quando la band non fu notata in un concerto (alla Town City Hall di Barnsley) da un uomo, Peter Hinton, che lavorava presso la EMI records. Peter rimase impressionato dalla potenza e dalla freschezza musicale del combo di Biff, e ne parlò bene a Claude Carrere, che aveva appena lanciato la sua omonima casa discografica. Claude accettò di sponsorizzare la band in seguito all'ascolto dei loro demo, che, ovviamente, lo impressionarono. Fu così che, a tre anni dalla nascita ufficiale dei Saxon (nel 1976), la band ebbe l'opportunità di registrare il suo primo disco, dal titolo omonimo a quello della band, disco che venne introdotto ai mercati mondiali. Era il maggio del 1979. Saxon, seppur abbastanza grezzo, fu una grande e piacevole sorpresa nel panorama rock mondiale, e fu accompagnato dai singoli "Big Teaser c/w Stallions of The Highway" e "Back to the Walls c/w Militia Guard", che fu rilasciato in occasione del primo tour serio della band, un tour nazionale a supporto dei Motorhead. Entrambi i singoli, in periodi diversi, arrivarono ai vertici delle charts Heavy Metal britanniche, testimonianza dell'entusiasmo con la quale gli inglesi avevano accolto questa band, nuova sì, ma sicuramente in grado di dire la sua.
