Prediction Of Warfare Nonostante sia stato proprio il precedente "Fate Of Norns" a dare la definitiva notorietà agli Amon Amarth, chi scrive ha sempre trovato quel disco un po' troppo prolisso e pretenzioso rispetto ai lavori degli esordi e infatti continua a considerare "Once Sent From The Golden Hall" e "The Avenger" gli apici discografici della band svedese. Adesso è però il turno di questo sesto album, "With Oden On Our Side", che, a detta della Metal Blade, dovrebbe rappresentare il disco più vario e completo della discografia del quintetto. Ci pensa "Valhall Awaits Me" ad aprire il CD e a far ben sperare l'attento ascoltatore: un pezzo violento e deciso, dallo svolgimento abbastanza lineare e in cui si incastonano le ormai tipiche melodie viking. Nulla di nuovo sotto il sole, ma il brano - movimentato e per nulla prolisso - risulta ispirato e piacevole dalla prima all'ultima nota. E questo, per nostro sommo gaudio, sarà il cosiddetto leit motiv dell'intero album! "With Oden On Our Side" infatti non presenta alcun tipo di novità dal punto di vista stilistico, però ha il grande pregio di essere sempre piuttosto frizzante e vario, offrendo una tracklist che, a differenza di "Fate Of Norns", non consta esclusivamente di monolitici midtempo. Certo, è evidente che gli Amon Amarth prediligano esprimersi in quest'ultimo modo - prova ne sono le varie "Runes To My Memory", "Gods Of War Arise" e "Prediction Of Warfare", composizioni comunque più brillanti di quelle contenute nell'ultimo CD - ma almeno questa volta non ci tocca affrontare un interminabile muro di doppia cassa e riff quadrati. "Asator" e "Cry Of The Black Birds" - la prima con uno stacco centrale veramente brutale, la seconda con una andatura agile e delle melodie eccellenti - conferiscono infatti al platter quella varietà che tanto era mancata in "Fate Of Norns", rendendo l'ascolto infinitamente più godibile. Ovvio che chi non ha mai apprezzato gli Amon Amarth non riuscirà neppure questa volta a scovare qualche spunto degno di interesse, d'altro canto siamo dell'idea che tutti i loro fan saranno invece più che felici di avvicinarsi ad un lavoro del genere. Lavoro che - ci dispiace per la Metal Blade - a conti fatti non è sicuramente vario e completo tanto quanto i vari "Once Sent..." e "The Avenger", ma che almeno si rivela curato quel che basta per riportare i cinque svedesi su livelli qualitativi degni della loro fama. Ottimo ritorno!
