Quella che spesso viene denominata “ondata power” è quel breve lasso di tempo che ha portato alla rinascita di un genere (il power in versione melodica) con tante nuove formazioni di talento capaci di svecchiare il movimento dandone nuova linfa. La spinta è stata data da album come Land of The Free, Imaginations From The Other Side e Visions: 3 capolavori assoluti targati 1995 che uniscono in modo diverso melodia e potenza. Oltre a garantire l’immortalità musicale di Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian e Stratovarius questi cd sono stati presi come insostituibile punto di riferimento e solo 2 anni dopo, (nel celebre 1997), sono arrivati tanti ottimi lavori degli esordienti Nightwish, Rhapsody, Edguy e Hammerfall che lanciarono queste formazioni verso un successo crescente negli anni. L’ultimo grande nuovo gruppo power che si può far risalire alla metà degli anni ‘90 proviene dalla fredda Finlandia e più precisamente da Kemi. In questa fredda cittadina, nel 1996, un gruppo di amici con la passione per il buon hard rock decise di formare una band: nascono così i Tricky Beans. In due anni danno alla luce a 3 demo (Agre Pamppers, Friends Till The End e Peacemaker). Inutile mentire cercando di descrivere quei prodotti visto che non li ho mai sentiti. Quello che posso ipotizzare è che il risultato debba essere stato convincente. I Tricky Beans erano formati da Tony Kakko (voce), Jani Liimaitainen / Marko Paasikoski (Chitarre), Pentti Peura al basso e Tommy Portimo alla batteria. Con il cambio del bassista la band raggiunge nuovi equilibri e comincia a pensare sul serio di poter sfondare. Cambiano il nome in Tricky Means e fanno pubblicare l’ultimo e fortunato demo Fullmoon (1999) che, con 4 canzoni dal potenziale commerciale immenso come Mary-Lou, UnOpened, 8th Commandment e Fullmoon, attira l’attenzione della Spinefarm records che li mette subito sotto contratto. Nascono così i Sonata Arctica e la loro carriera discografica inizia con Ecliptica in quello stesso anno.
