SCANDAL PRISM: Espionage: Brazil and Mexico summit the United States to explain

 

The governments of Brazil and Mexico requested, Monday, September 2, official explanations in the United States, in the wake of accusations made yesterday by the Brazilian TV Globo TV espionage Presidents Dilma Rousseff and Enrique Peña Nieto. U.S. ambassadors in both countries have also been invited.  

Ambassador to Brazil, Thomas Shannon, was summoned to explain this potential "attack" on the sovereignty of Brazil, while in the weekend will be held Summit G20 in Saint Petersburg, where the Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, will meet his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama.

On the agenda of the Brazilian leader also included a state visit to Washington in October. Its annulment was not mentioned by the Brazilian authorities.

Mexico requires a "thorough investigation"

The Mexican Foreign Ministry also announced Monday in a statement it had summoned the Ambassador of the United States to Mexico and sent a diplomatic telegram Washington "demanding a full investigation" into the allegations of spying.

"Without prejudice to the veracity of this information [...] the Mexican government rejects and condemns any espionage Mexican citizens," said the Chancellor in his statement. 

According to new revelations broadcast by Globo TV channel Sunday evening, obtained in collaboration with the journalist of "The Guardian" Glenn Greenwald, the United States spied late 2012 communications Brazilian president and the current president of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto, when he was running for president.

Second scandal in July

The alleged scandal comes two months after the revelations of the daily "O Globo" indicating that Brazil is part of a network of 16 bases espionage im secret services ; Ricans. Information that Brasilia was taken seriously, asking for explanations in Washington and threatening to take the matter to international organizations.  

The Brazilian Minister of Justice visited the United States last week to discuss the issue with including U.S. Vice President Joe Biden. But he lamented that Washington has refused a Brazilian proposal to negotiate a bilateral agreement relating to espionage.
