Four poems from Notti di pace occidentale
I I see from the darkness as from the most brightly lit balcony. The body is a hatchet: it falls on the light pushing it in silence to the most naked path - to the blackness of a time that is making in the space my feet have trampled an extremely slow promised land. To find the reason in a verb because it really isn't time yet and we don't know whether to come running or to flee. You fall like a December evening over the boxes lifted on the wedge of removal you give form to the darkness as food flares out on the wall. These are the nights of western peace in their rays the anguish of biographies flies the dark grapes of portraits, the scrolls of names. Another stillness defends us from the side like a sea weight in jute folded over time, with desperation.
III
XIII for Nathan Zach Even these are lines of war written while it rages, not far away, not close by and we sit at an odd angle around a lamp-lit table as they deck the doorways with palms even this is a song unto God that He may lower His gaze upon us worms and trample on us loved and unloved ones alike. Not a truce - a gift for this lightning-struck land.
p. 37 Sit in front of the window look, but accept desperation: there is truth in the moon that shines though it does not rise shield-like against pain it translates itself - as I have just translated from the open facing the wall - it simply links the desk to thought in a wait that burns, but does not explain and it torments every page in the air with fir tree music, hostile lights. |
