Byeon Hyun-min (34), a female professional golfer, died on the 29th of last month after battling a brain tumor.
Having won two KLPGA tour titles, Byun has been battling the disease since she underwent surgery for a brain tumor last year. After contracting meningitis during rehabilitation training, she reportedly lost her sight and suffered from headache this year.
Byun started playing golf along with his father when he was a third grader. In his second year of middle school, he never gave up and dreamed of becoming a professional golfer despite the tough circumstances in which his father passed away due to cirrhosis of the liver. When he was a junior, he couldn’t do a practice round and participated in a competition.
Byun, who never gave up and ran, became a full member of the KLPGA in 2007 when he was a senior in high school. After making the first tour in three years, she won her first championship at the Hidden Valley Women’s Open in 2011, the second year of her tour. Two years later, she grabbed her second championship trophy at the S-Oil Championship in 2013.
Byun retired in 2019. When he retired, he said, “I’m tired of fierce competition to take away someone’s position. I retired to do what I like.” Although he retired, he has reportedly continued to do good deeds, including giving scholarships and making talent donations for juniors in need.
“He was a very sincere and good player. He was polite and good-natured, and it’s too bad for him,” said an official at Rico Agency who handled his management when he was a player. The golfing community was also saddened by the news of Byun’s obituary, which he had done well despite difficulties.
