According to Thursday’s report to the Korea Exchange, casino revenues for Paradise Inc., a foreign-only casino operator in South Korea, fell 86.1 percent in April from a year earlier. These revenues were about 7.93 billion won (US$6.5 million), compared to 57.13 billion won in April 2019.
The casino revenue tally in April fell 57.8% month-on-month, the operator said.
Paradise’s gaming operations are operated at Walkerhill in Seoul, Jeju Grand in Jeju Island, Busan Casino in the southern port city of Busan, and Paradise City in Incheon (pictured).
Paradise said it would close its four casino sites for two weeks on March 24 following efforts by the country to curb the further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of its non-game services, such as entertainment venues, were also closed.
The company reopened its casinos on Jeju Island on Apr. 13. It resumed operations at the other three game venues on Apr. 20.
Table sales in Paradise fell 87.1 percent year-on-year to below W6.91 billion in April. Game console sales fell 71.7 percent year-on-year to W1.02 billion.
Paradise’s cumulative casino revenue in January-April 2020 was 162.24 billion won, down 25.8% year-over-year.
Cumulative table sales fell 25.1% year-on-year to 152.34 billion won in the January-April period. Game console sales dropped 34.2% year-on-year to 9.9 billion won.
South Korea has been praised by international experts as one of the first countries in the world to control a major COVID-19 outbreak. The number of new cases in South Korea has been gradually decreasing since peaking at 909 on Feb. 28. As of Thursday, South Korea had recorded only two new cases in the past 24 hours, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
