JAZZ BASSIST CHARLES FAMBROUGH DIES

Bassist Charles Fambrough died on January 1, 2011. He had been ill for last few years with liver disease. He was 60 years old.

Fambrough was born in Philadelphia on August 25, 1950. Originally trained on the piano, Fambrough received a scholarship to study classical music, but picked up the bass at age 13, eventually leaving school to pursue his true passion in jazz as a bassist. By 1968 he was performing professionally in various pit bands around the city.

In this thirty-year career, bassist, bandleader and composer Charles Fambrough has played with McCoy Tyner, Grover Washington Jr., Art Blakey, Flora Purim and Airto, the Fort Apache Band, and Egberto Gismonti among others.

He is a prolific composer whose songs have been recorded by the Jazz Messengers, Roy Hargrove, Stanley Turrentine, Craig Handy and Joe Ford. Fambrough's love for contemporary African-American, Latin and Brazilian music has been evident from his first recording as a leader, "The Proper Angle."

His forthcoming release for New Groove Records features a diverse aggregation of styles and players--from Washington, John Lucien and George Duke, to modern straight ahead pianists Mulgrew Miller and Bruce Barth. Fambrough is the consummate musician unencumbered by labels or limitations, and refuses to confine his creativity to the jazz mainstream.

Bassist Charles Fambrough gathered together a rather impressive lineup of young greats (including on various cuts trumpeters Wynton Marsalis and Roy Hargrove, saxophonists Branford Marsalis and Joe Ford, keyboardist Kenny Kirkland, drummer Jeff Watts, and three percussionists) for a set of tricky hard bop originals. The interplay between the two Marsalises on the rapid "Broksi" is a high point, but the solos throughout the date are uniformly strong. Fambrough (who contributed seven of the pieces) stated accurately that the music reflects his periods with McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey, Grover Washington, Jr., and Airto. His well-conceived set is highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Condividere le emozioni scaturite da un libro o da un film è cosa che mi piace da sempre, non c'è nulla di cui scusarsi, anzi, per me è un vero piacere trovare persone che hanno provato gli stessi sentimenti. Mi dispiace solo di non avere il tempo sufficiente da dedicare a libri e film sul blog: ne parlo troppo raramente mentre meriterebbero più spazio e considerazione. Appena riesco comunque vado alla ricerca dei tuoi post...Grazie per la visita (che presto ricambierò) e per l'apprezzamento Roberto
