AUGURI ELIANE

Eliane Elias (San Paolo, 19 marzo 1960) è una pianista, compositrice e cantante brasiliana.

Pianista jazz di indiscussa tecnica e capacità compositive. In età precoce, sotto l'influenza della madre, si avvicina al jazz, al quale si legherà in maniera indissolubile. Poco più che bambina si diletta a trascrivere la musica di diversi artisti dell'epoca tra cui Bill Evans che nel tempo risulterà essere la sua principale fonte di ispirazione, più volte dichiarato dalla stessa Elias, fino a dedicargli un album pubblicato nel 2008 Something For You. Nonostante il jazz rappresenti il suo humus musicale, Eliane Elias non tradisce le origini latine; nelle sue pubblicazioni infatti non è difficile imbattersi in gran parte del repertorio classico brasiliano, talvolta rivisitato in una personalissima chiave jazz che le renderà successi e onori sulla scena internazionale riuscendo a creare una efficace alchimia fra musica colta nordamericana e bossa nova. Giovanissima già si annoverano collaborazioni eccellenti, fra cui il batterista Peter Erskine e il contrabbassista Marc Johnson, l'ultimo a far parte della band Bill Evans. Attualmente detiene la cattedra di piano jazz alla Manhattan School of Musics. Nel 1983 entra a far parte degli Steps Ahead con i quali si ricorda una memorabile performance a Copenaghen. Dal 1987 in poi prende il via la sua copiscua serie di pubblicazioni fino ad oggi sempre alternando pura improvvisazione jazz alla bossa nova senza trascurare le contaminazioni di tutti gli artisti con cui ha collaborato e collabora.

"I think that Michael Jackson was a giant of 20th-century music.” The sentiment is growing lately within jazz, particularly since Jackson’s untimely death in 2009. But the King of Pop’s disciples tend to skew young—the children of the 1980s who grew up with massive hit records like Thriller and Bad. The speaker here, however, is 73-year-old Enrico Rava, the trumpeter from Trieste, Italy. He was so impressed by Jackson’s music, in fact, that he performed two concerts of it in Rome in 2011. Those shows are now Rava’s latest album for the ECM label, On the Dance Floor.

“Usually I play my own music,” he says. “But in this case I wanted to play something that I really like. So I said, ‘OK, I love this music so much I’m going to do something with it.’”

When pint-sized Michael and his brothers hit it big, Rava was 30 and working on the New York jazz scene. He was back in Italy as the singer gained worldwide superstardom in the ’80s, and Rava barely noticed. Not that he could miss Jackson entirely. “He was on every jukebox, all over the world,” he acknowledges. “But I was young and very ‘only jazz.’ I never really concentrated on it.”
