UN: Palestinian State: Juppe warned against an "explosion of violence" in the Middle EastAFP - The status quo can not continue between Israel and the Palestinians, said Monday in New York the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Alain Juppe, who said he feared "an explosion of violence" in the region. "You have to restart the peace process" between Israelis and Palestinians, said Mr. EnglishJuppe to the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), an American think-tank, said it was the status quo "unacceptable and untenable". Intense diplomatic exchanges take place for several days to avoid a major confrontation with the United Nations, where Palestinians have Friday to file an application for membership of their State. Israel is opposed to this approach "unilateral", as the United States, sponsors of the peace process for decades, who have announced they will veto at the request of the Palestinians if they choose to go to the Security Council. Many analysts fear that the diplomatic standoff degenerated into clashes on the ground. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who arrived in the night in New York for the Annual General Meeting of the United Nations itself has said that the Palestinians expected the times "very difficult" after their initiative at the UN. Mr Juppe said he would on Monday afternoon with President Abbas. "I'll ask him what his strategy," he announced, "Go to the Security Council, and then what next? We must avoid such a confrontation. We must find a balanced solution. We have three or four days to find such a solution. " |
